Description
T. n. BEVANS & c. BARKENBUS.
Improvement in Thill Coupling.
' No. 122,699, Patented Jan.i6,i872.
I v 1. 5% my,
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,699, dated January 16, 1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS R, BEVANS and CORNELIUS BARKENBUS, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OarriageShaft Clip and Shackle and do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the let ters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a top-plan representation of our device.
Like letters refer tolike parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a clip and shackle, by means of which shafts or poles are attached to carriages, so as to be noiseless in their operation, easily kept in repair, and adjusted as it wears. The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of its several parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the semicircular box, which is concave on its front side, and receives therein a piece of rubber, covered by a piece of leather, the former O, which forms a properly-threaded half-nut, to receive the tapering screw D. A projection, E, from the front of the clip F, which surrounds the axle G, forms the other half of the nut, and is properly threaded for that purpose. The semicircular box A fits between the jaws H of the clip that receives the shaft eyes, and to which they are secured by the bolt I.
By the use of this device all rattling and noise by concussion of the parts are avoided, and as the parts wear they may be tightened by means of the tapering screw, the removal of which will allow the box A to be removed to replace the leather when worn out.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The carriage-shaft clip and shackle, above described, consistingof the clip F provided with the stud E and the jaws H, the tapering screw D, the stud G, the box A packed with rubber and leather, and the shaft-eye B secured by the bolt 1, when each of said parts is constructed, and all are arranged as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
THOS. R. BEVANS. CORNELIUS BARKENBUS.
