To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIC J. WAHLBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Bragg, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mountings for S1lo- Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to silo doors, and has for its object to provide a simplified and improved mounting therefor.
Silo doors ordinarily do not have hinges but work in vertical guides and are generally removed bodily on emptying the contents of the silo. This is objectionable on account of the possibility of breaking the doors and misplacing the same. A hinge mounting is desirable for this purpose and the hinge should be placed 011 the outside where it will not be contacted by the ensilage and yet permit the door to swing inwardly and rest flatly against the inside of the silo. The hinge must be small and compact and not project in such way as to obstruct the ladder which is formed across the vertical opening or doorway.
One formwhich my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a portion of a silo embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a sectional view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the hinge mounting detached.
In the drawings I show a silo 10 having a vertical opening or doorway 11 and a series of door sections 1.2 for closing said openings. The door sections rest against the inside faces of vertical side jambs 13 and horizontal cross-jambs l4, and each door or section has cleats 15 near its top and bottom ends carrying ladder runs 16.
The hinge mounting is so constructed as to nest in the corner of the doorway between the cleats 15, and comprise a pair of vertically spaced straps 20 screwed or bolted to one of the side jambs 13 and forming bearings or supports for journal pins 21 to which cross-arms 22, formed integrally on the ends of a vertical supporting member 23, are connected. By making the arms 22 and links 25 comparatively short, and folding them in V shaped relation, I avoid any obstruction of the ladder rungs 16 and yet obtain sufiicient movement of the parts to permit the door to swing inwardly clear of the doorway and rest with its inner face engaging the side of the silo. The arms 22 are slightly longer than the links 25 and are adapted to project through the doorway when the door is open and engage the edge of the side jamb, projecting just far enough beyond the inner face of the jamb to permit the links 25 to swing to one side with the door, and allow the adjacent edge of the door to fit in the angle or corner formed by the links 25 and arms 22. The vertical connection between the arms 22 is preferably reinforced by a rib 28 and afiords an improved support for the door.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hinge for silo doors composed of a vertical member having a cross arm on each end thereof, jamb straps pivotally connected with one end of each respective cross arm, links pivotally connected at one end with the respective other ends of the cross arms, and door straps pivotally connected to the other respective ends of the swinging links, said member in open position of the door being engageable with the inner side edge of the jam 2. A hinge for silo doors composed of a vertical member, jamb straps pivotally connected with the respective ends of said member, links also pivotally connected at one end with the respective ends of said memher, and door straps pivotally connected to the opposite respective ends of the links.
