Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.. 3, 1917.
Application led January 29, 1917. Serial No. 145,142.
To all whom z't may-concern.'
Be it known. that LADOLF CHODAKOVSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Burgla'r-'l`1-aps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burglar traps and has special reference to a spring jaw trap of norel construction.
One important object ot the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object ot the invention is to provide an improved tripping or trigger mechanism for use in connection with spring jaw traps of this character.
With the above and other objects in view,
such as will be hereinafter apparent the inl' section showing the locking lugs and adjacent parts.
In the embodiment of theinvention herein illustrated there is disclosed a circular hase plate and to the lower side of this base plate is suitably secured a spring metal bar 11 which extends diametrically across the base plate and projects radially therefrom. This bar 11 is bent at its outer end to form a spring eye 12 and is continued backward toward the center of the plate l() in a radial direction as indicated at 13. rllhe portion 13 of the bar terminates in a rectangular eye 14 which is adapted to lit over a double bearing lug 15 formed on the plate 10 opposite a similar bearing lug 16.
The jaws of the trap each consist of a semi-circular toothed portion 17 provided with journal ends 18 which fit the bearing lugs 15 and 16 and the spring is so arranged that it bears against these jaws to cause them to assume the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 while, at the same time, the jaws may be bent down as indicated in full lines in said figure, their downward movement being limited by stops 1S) which engage the upper surface of the plate 10. Mounted on the plate 10 is a pair oit' bearing lugs 20 having inclined slots 21 formed therein and in these slots 21 are mounted the journals 22 of a trigger plate 23 having a downturned projecting portion 24 which rests against the plate 10 when the trigger is set. Extending from the plate 23 are lugs 25 which engage, when` the trap is set, on top of lugs 26 formed on the jaws 17 as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
In the operation of the device when the burglar steps on the trigger plate 23 this tends to cause downward movement of the trigger plate at the front end and the weight of the person will cause the plate to rotate on the lugs 26 so that the rear end of the plate rises and the journal members 22 will slide along` the inclined slot 21 so as to free the lugs 25 from the lugs 26 and thereby permit the spring 13 to snap the jaws upward and grasp the person by the leg. It will be noted that when the device is set the portion 24 of the trigger plate will prevent the front end of the trigger plate from tilting up and it is further to be noted that the inclination of the slots 21 is such that the force of the spring will not be sutlicient to lift the front end of the trigger plate 23 through the action of the lugs 26 on the lugs 25.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and Jfor the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles'thereof. It is not therefore desired to coniine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is V In a burglar traphaving a base plate, opposed pivoted jaws and spring means for closing said jaws; a trigger mechanism consisting of a trigger plate provided with laterally projecting lugs, lugs on said aws underlying the plate lugs when the trap is set,
said lugs coperating to form fulcra for the M0 trigger plate, journal lugs on the trigger stops on the jaws engaging the base plate to plate, journal brackets on the base plate limit the opening movement of said jaws. 10 having slots receiving the journal lugs and In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature. extending upwardly and forwardly toward ADOLF CHODAKOVSKI 5 the first-mentioned lugs, a downturned end on the triggerV plate engaging the base plate In the presence ofand limiting thev movement of the trigger MARY K. FLAHERTY, plate about the axis of the journal lugs, and MARY E. LOGAN.
