and while particularly intended for holding a patients arms while on an operating table,

it is by no. means limited to this use, and

is capable of being employed for many purposes of an analogous character, as will be evident.

The primary object is to provide a navel device which is exceedingly simple in construction, and will confine a persons arms, so that they cannot be freed by him. At the same time, when confined, they will be maintained in a normal comfortable position, and will be permitted sufficient play and movement to be restful.

An embodiment of the invention that has proven entirely serviceable is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 as a perspective view illustrating the same in use.

In the embodiment illustrated, a tapered sheet or section 6 of strong, preferably woven material, such as canvas, 1s employed, and the side margins 7 thereof are doubled back over its upper face and the inner edges are sewed to the same, as indicated at 8. This produces a pair of arm-receiving and holding pockets upon the upper face of the sheet longitudinally of the same, said pockets having open upper ends and tapering toward their lower ends, said lower ends being closed. The upper portions of the inturned margins are preferably turned back, as shown at, 9, and sewed to produce reinforcements and also bring the open upper ends of the pockets slightly below the upper edge of the sheet.

Divergently disposed shoulder straps 10 are secured to the central upper portion of the sheet, preferably upon the rear side of the same, and have suitable eyes 11 in which are engaged the tongues of buckles 12 carried by the reinforcements 9 on the upper ends of the pockets. A transversely disposed strapv 13 is secured to the central portion of the upper edge of the sheet over the secured ends of the straps 10. This strap 13 has a buckle 1d at one end and eyes 15 at the other to. receive the tongue thereof.

In using the device, the same is laid upon the operating table or other support and the patient placed upon the sheet between the pockets with his arms in said pockets. The straps 10 are fastened securely over his shoulders and buckled at 12 while the strap 13 is passed beneath the table and is made fast thereto. It will be evident therefore that the patients arms are confined at his sides and he cannot disengage them from the pockets, nor raise them so as to interfere with the operation or the operator. At the same time not only are they comfortably held, but they can be moved to some extent within the pockets and thus their positions changed.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An arm restraining device for patients being operated upon, comprising a sheet on which the body of the patient rests and is unobstructedly exposed, spaced pockets of sufficient length to contain substantially the complete arms and hands of the patient, extending longitudinally along and fixed to the sheet to prevent the arms and hands be ing raised, said pockets having open upper ends, and detachable means connecting the upper side walls of the pockets and the sheet and arranged to extend over the patients shoulders for securing the upper portion of the patient to the sheet and retaining the arms in the pockets While maintaining the body unobstructedly exposed for operating purposes.

2. An arm restraining device for patients being operated upon, comprising a sheet on which the body of the patient rests and is unobstructedly exposed, spaced pockets of sufficient length to contain substantially the complete arms and hands of the patient, extending longitudinally along and fixed to the sheet to Prevent the arms and hands being raised, the upper ends of the pockets being open and located over the upper surface of the sheet on which the patient rests, and shoulder straps connecting the upper portion of the sheet and pockets to retain the patients arms and hands in the said pockets, While maintaining the body fully exposed for operating purposes.

3. An article of the character set forth, comprising a sheet on which the patient is placed, said sheet having side margins doubled back and secured to the main body thereof, thereby forming arm receiving and holding pockets, having open upper ends, and shoulder straps connecting the upper end of the sheet and the pockets.

4. An article of the character set forth, comprising a sheet on Which the patient is placed,.said sheet having its side margins doubled back and secured thereto, forming spaced longitudinally disposed arm receiving and holding pockets, shoulder straps and buckles therefor secured respectively to the upper portions of the sheet andpockets,

and a table embracing strap secured to the upper margin of the sheet transversely thereof.

5. An article of the character set forth, comprising a sheet having a central portion on Which the body of the patient lies, spaced arm receiving pockets located longitudinally along the opposite sides of said central body receiving portion and secured thereto, said pockets having upper Walls that terminate short of the upper end of the sheet, forming open ends for said pockets located above the surface of the sheet, below its lower edge, detachable shoul der encircling means for connecting the upper pocket Walls and upper end of the sheet for retaining the arms and hands of the patient in the pockets While leaving the body exposed, and means for securing the sheet to an operating table.
