UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. CLARE,YOF GLENELLYN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 A.SHARP & SMITH, .OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS. l
ARTIFICIAL-ANUS APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1917.
Application filed April 5, 1916. Serial No. 89,040.A
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CLARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artificial-Anus Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. t
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in artificial anus apparatus and is fully described and explained in the specification shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichy Figure l is a perspective of my improved device; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the cup and cushion; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3.
of Fi 2.
Re erring to the drawings 4 is a shallow cup having an outwardly-extending flange 5 and a downwardly-opening neck 6, to which is removably attached (preferably by tying with a string) a rubber pouch 7 to catch the excl-ement. A hollow cushion 8 lies back of the flange 5, and is provided with an inwardly-extending elastic annular flap 9 which overlies the front of the cup and is buttoned thereto as shown, pegs 10 being provided on the cup for the purpose. A belt 11 supports the cup, straps 12 on the ends thereof engaging the pegs 10.
Y A thigh-strap 13 connects the two lower pegs and passes around one thigh to assist in fixing the position of the cup.
The present device is especially sanitaryannular inflatable in use, and is also particularly tight and comfortable. The cup is free from grooves and all parts that cannot `be easily cleaned and the cushion is tightly fastened in a position to make a tightjoint with the body and yet is readilyl removable for cleaning.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of 'the construction herein shown, and I do not intend to limit myselfthereto, except as pointed out in the following claim` in which it is my intention to claim all the novelty inherent in the device as broadly as ispermittedby the state of the art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the class' described comprising a cup having a relatively broad outwardly extending peripheral flange at one side and a depending tube at the other, a container carried by said tube, an annular pneumatic cushion behind and resting against said flange, an elastic flap secured to said cushion and stretched overthe front of the cup and removably secured thereto, a strap and attaching means therefor substantially integral and directly attached to said cup whereby the device may be secured in place and hold the cushion against the body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand this 1st day of April, nineteen hundred and sixteen.
CHARLES E. CLARE.
