HINGE.
Original application led September 25, 1915, Serial No. 52,578.
Serial No. 110,019.
To @ZZ whom t may concern L' Be it known that l, JOHN E. RABER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of 0hio, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to hinges adapted for use where it is desired to hold the door or swinging element in an elevated position and at the same time provide means for preventing the removal of the hinge pins.
The present invention is a division of my application, Serial No. 52,578, for improvement in chutes for glazed windows, iiled VSeptember 25th, 1915, and the invention herein claimed relates to the hinge illustrated and described in the above mentioned application.
The objects of the present invention are, first, to generally improve the construction of hinges, second, to hold the swinging door or other element in elevated position, and third, to prevent the removal of thehinge pin. rhess objects, together with other objects readily apparent'to those skilled in the art, may be attained by the'construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, a though the invention may be embodied in other forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.
ln the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of the wall of a house or building showing the door closed and the hinges properly connected. Fig. 2 is a view showing a portion of a door or swinging element, and a portion of a casing showing the door locked in elevation, the door and casing being shown in section. F 3 is a view showing a portion of the door casing in section and illustrating in dotted lines the different positions of the door. Fig. 4 shows the hinge separated with parts broken away. F ig. 5 is a section taken on line 4 4, Fig. 4, showing the plug inserted.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several P ures of the drawing.
Referring more especially to the accompanying drawing, the numeral l indicates the portion of a wall of a building which may be oie any desired construction and the same is shown conventionally. To the wall Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 11917.
Bivded and this application filed July 19,
and 5, a stop block G is formed between the ears 4 and 5 of each hinge near the lower edges thereof for the purpose of raising and holding the hinge i-n open position when the door or other hinge element is open as shown in Fig. 2. The inner corners of each movable member 7 are beveled as shown at 8 in order to more easily operate the hinge as hereinafter described. Each or' the ears 4 and 5 is provided upon its inner face with a vertically disposed groove 9, said grooves being arranged to receive the hinge pin l0, which is carried by the movable member 7 of the hinge. An aperture 11 is provided through one or both of the ears 4 and 5 communicating with the grooves 9 therein for the purpose of inserting the pins 10 and a suitable plug may be )laced within said apertures after the pins have been properly inserted. rlhe pins 10 are located through suitable apertures vl2 in the movable member 7 of the hinge, thus forming a pivot for the movable member.
It will be understood that by forming the grooves 9 in the inner faces of the ears 4 and 5 and by connecting the hinge pins l0 to the hinge member 7 that a vertical movement in addition to the pivotal movement is obtained for the hinge member or door and when the door is in its loufermost position or closed position the hinge pin l() will rest upon the bottoms of the grooves 9. lVhen the door or hinge element is swung upward and into its uppermost position, thereby clearing the hinge member 7 from the stop block G, the door or hinge member will move downward a short distance, which downward movement brings the hinge member 7 into position to come in contact with the stop block 6, thereby preventing any pivotal movement oi? the door or hinge member, the pins 10 resting in the bottom of the groove'.
lt will be understood that when the door is in its lowermost position it can be opened and swung' upward, the door swinging in the usual manner and when brought to its lowermost position it will drop vertically and be locked against pivotal movement, or in other Words held in its opened position until elevated.
It Will be understood that when the door 14 is in a. closed position the hinge pin l() Will be out of alinement with the aperture ll so that regardless oi:l the fact as to whether or not the aperture 11 is plugged or closed the pins cannot be removed, thereby better providing protection against unlawful tampering with the hinge or hinges of the door or hinge member; or in other Words, I am enabled to entirely conceal the pins of the hinges.
In F ig. 5 I have illustrated the plug 13' in position to close the aperture 11.
It will be understood that by beveling the lower inner corner of the hinge member 7 the door Will be elevated and lowered by reason of the said beveled portion coming in contact With the corner or edge of the stop block G.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a hinge of the character described, the combination of fixed and hinge members, the lixed member provided with ears having grooves in their inner faces, said grooves not extending' entirely through said ears, and a pin located through the hinge member and extending into said grooves, one oi said ears having an aperture communicating with the groove therein for inserting said pin.
2. In a hinge of the character described7 the combination of fixed and hinge members, the fixed members provided with ears having grooves in their inner faces, said grooves not extending entirely through said ears, a pin located through the hinge member and extending into said grooves, one of said ears having an aperture communicating with the groove therein for inserting said pin and a removable plug for closing the aperture in said ear after the pin is inserted.
3. In a hinge 01": the class described, the combination of iixed and hinge members, the fixed member provided with ears having vertical grooves in their inner faces, said grooves not extending entirely through said ears, a pin located through the hinge member and extending into said grooves, one oic said ears having an aperture communicating with the groove therein for inserting said pin, and a stop block located below the pin and betiveen the ears of the ixed hinge member.
l. In a hinge of the class described, the combination of iixed and hinge members, the ixed member provided with ears having grooves in their inner faces and an aperture located through the ears of the fixed hinge member, said apertures communicating 'with the grooves, the hinge member having located therethrough a pin, the extended portions of the pin seated in the groove, and means for closing the apertures in the ears of the fixed hinge member.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN E. HABER.
