.lie itiaknoivn that We, SAMUEL EDWARD Anni' and JAY il. HERN, citizens ol' 'the United States, residing at Fellows, in the county of Kern, State of California, have invented a nei* and useful Elevatorq of which the following is a specilication.
rlhe present invention appertains to elevators for raising sucker, puinoor polish rods from drilled Wells, and aims to provide a novel and irrprovcd device of that character.
The present device has novel means for attaching it to the sucker rod or other ele* ment to be lifted, whereby the elevator is not liable to be detached accidentally. although it can be removed easily by hand from the rod.
It is also Within the scope of the invcntion to pro-vide an elevator ofthe nature indicated which is extremely'sinq'lle, com-- pact and. inexpensive in construction, and which is thoroughly practical, reliable and eiiicient in use.
With the foregoing and other objectsin view which will appear as the c'lescription proceeds, he invention residesjin theecomhination and arrangement cliparts and in the details of construction hereinafter clescrihecl and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise 'nhodiment of the invention herein disclosed'oan be made with-in. thescope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying ont the invention, there is provided a body 1 provided 2 adapted to be journaled in the terminals ci? 'an ordinary elevator hail (not shown); and said body is also provided with a radial open slot 3 for the reception of the sucker rod or other member which is to be elevated withv the body 1. Thebocly l is formed at opposite sides of the slot 3 with recesses "4l extending from the open end or menthol' the slot 3 to a point short ot' the inner end of said slot and located between the upper and lower faces-of the body. The recesses 4 provide walls facing the slot 3 and are provided with extensions 5 at their outer ends projecting away from one another `to `latches 7 are provided with c other so as to enter at fliainetrically opposite points with outstanding trunnions those sides of the body from which the trunnions 2 project and providing Walls at an angle with the aforesaid 'Walls The body l also has sockets or cavities 6 openM imr into the recesses l adjacent their .innerl ends.
Mounted for swinging movements Within the recesses 4 are. latches ,7, which are pivotally mounted upon bolts 8 or other pivot elements engaged through the body 1 at the opposite sides of and adjacent to the open end of the slot and extending through the recesses Il between their ends. The latches Z project inwardly and converge toward. one another7 the inner ends of the latches being' adapted to abut against the rod which fits within the slot 3 adjacent the inner end thereof. The outer ends of the linger pieces 9 adjacent to the open end of the slot 3' eX- tencling at obtuse angles from the latches 7 in opposite directions away fronrone anthe extensions 5 of the recesses,
The latches 7 are normally swung toward one. another within the slot 3 underr the inlin ence of coiledswire expansion spriz-igs confined between the body l and latches, saith springs l0 seating in the sockets 6 and Within sockets ll with which the latches are provided.
To apply the elevator to the sucker roel, the body l is moved transversely so that the rod enters the slot 3. and the rod. can readily move -pas't thelatches 7 which are forced apart into the recesses 4f bythe rod. After the rod moves to thc'inner end of the/slot 3 past the latches' the latches will be swung behind the rod under the influence of the springs l0.y thus holding the elevator in place upon the rod. li the rod and elevator rotatey 'relative to one another, this is notl apt to rellcasethe latches, since the tendency of the rod in rotating against the latches to move one latch into' its recess tends to move the other latch ont of its recess. Consequently, the latches cannot both be accidentally -lorced `l aclc-into their recesses. When the elevator is applied to the roel, so that the rod will he raised. with the elevator, the elevator can he raised in the ordinary ina-nner to carry the rod upwardly therewith." It .is an easy matter to remove the elevator from he rod, since the linger pieces 9 een be pressed toward one another by the thumb and one nger of the hand, which will swingY the latches 7 away from .one another, whereby the body l can be moi'ed sidewiSe to remove it from the rod without interference. The extensions 5 of the recesses l :wconinuidate the thumb and lingers` and this Jfacilitutes the retraction of the latches from the slot 3 in \\'ithdrawing the elevator from the rod.
The. present elevator is extremely simple in construction, is not apt to get out of order, und 'ulils its oiiice in a thoroughly reliable and etlicacious manner.

Havine; thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: y
An elevator embodying,r a body baviner radial open slot and recesses at the opposite sides of said slot between the faces of the body extending from the open end oi' the slot to a point short of the inner end of the slot, said recesses providing walls hiring the. slot, said recesses having extensions projecting away from one another at. the open end of the slot for receiving the thumb and finger of a hand for movement toward one another, -said extensions providing walls arranged at. an angle with the aforesaid walls, pivot members carried by the body within said rocesses between the ends thereof, latches pivotally mounted upon said pivot members within said recesses and projecting toward the closed end of the slot, said latches having linger pieces extendiugg` at obtuse angles therefrom beyond the pivot members and projecting away from one another to Contact with the second nientioned walls, and ex pansion springs between the latches and first mentioned walls; for swinging the latches toward one :mother and moving the linger pieces against the second mentioned Walls.
