IMPRQVEMENT IN BLACKlNG-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,907, dated November 14, 1871.

To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that I, THOMAS E. SINGLAIRE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blaoking-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in boxes for holding boot-andshoe blacking and it consists in the article, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a blacking-box made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the box with the cover off.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This box may be stamped from a single piece of tin or other sheet metal, or made of pieces soldered together, as may be deemed advisable or convenient by the manufacturer. Instead of making the sidesofthebox perpendicularwiththebottom,and thereby leaving a sharp corner to retain a large portion of the blacking, as is the case with the blacking-boxes in common use, I place the sides on a bevel, as seen in Fig. 1, leaving an angle still, but an angle so obtuse that the brush readily reaches the last particle of blacking in the corners. This formation not only saves at least ten per cent. of the blacking, but saves the brush from injury sustained in forcing it into a sharp corner and against the sharp edge of the box, besides a great deal of trouble and annoyance to the user.

A represents the beveled side of the box. B is a head or shoulder around the box at the base of the cover-flange O, which acts as a stop to keep the cover up from the surface of the blacking in the box. This head or shoulder is readily formed in stamping; and is a great improvement over the ordinary blacking-box, as when the cover is pressed down onto the blacking it is not only difficult to raise the cover, but a portion of the blaekin g adheres to it, involving more or less waste, besides presenting an unclean appearance. The perpendicular flange O is absolutely necessary in combination with the beveled sides A, as Without it the cover could not be made to fit the box.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as'new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an article of manufacture, a blacking-box having beveled sides A, rib B, and flange G, constructed substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
