Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 6, 1915. Serial No. 65,305.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER G. VETTER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing, at Alva, in the county of \Voods and State of Oklahoma,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Air-Intakes for Internal-Combustion Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same.
My invention which relates to improve ments in auxiliary air intakes for internal combustion engines, has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this class' which will be automatically controlled by the temperature of the engine.
With this general object in view, the ill-- vention resides in certain novel features. of constructlon and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanyingfirawing which constitutes a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention applied to the intake manifold of an engine; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section; and Fig.- 3 is a vertical transverse sectionas seen on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In specifically describing the invention shown in the drawings. above briefly described, similar characters will be placed on corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numeral 1 indicates a tubular attaching member having external screw threads on both of its end portions and -provided at approximately its center with a polysided enlargement 2 between which and a nut 3 threaded on the member. 1, one. end 4- of a U-shaped thermostat 5 is clamped. The other end 6 of the thermo- .stat 5 is provided with an opening alined with the bore of the tubular attaching memher 1, said opening receiving therein a needle valve in the form of a set. screw 7. One end of the screw 7 is positioned in close proximity to one end of the attaching member 1, and is preferably pointed as shown at 8 for engagement with .a suitable seat 9 formed within the aforesaid end of the-attaching member. In order to hold the screw 7 normally against turning, lock nuts 10 are threaded thereon in contact with the opposite sides of the end 6 of the thermostat.

This manner of operation is very desirable for reasons to be hereinafter fully explained.
In applying the in-vention to use, the end of the member 1 remote from the seat 9 is tapped into the intake manifold M of an internal combustion engine as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. Normally, the, pointed end 8 ,of the screw 7 will contact with the seat 9 and will thus prevent the entrance of fresh air into the'manifold, but when the latter becomes heated as the engine runs under its own power, the temperature of the thermoobvious that if desirable the valve may be so adjusted as to cause the thermostatto ex pand more than usual before the valve will be opened.

1. An auxiliary air intake valve fdr internal combustion engines comprising a combined attaching member and air passage in the form of a short tube having one end externally threaded to be tapped into an intake manifold, the other end of said tube being formed with a valve seat, a U-shaped two ends, the opening in one end of said thermostat having alined openings in its thermostat being spaced from and alined with the valve seat, a needle valve disposed through this opening and cooperating with said valve seat, the opening in the other end -'0f said thermostat receiving therein the form'of a tube having its opposite ends externally threaded, one of said ends being adapted to be tapped into an intake manifold while the other end is internally chamfered to form a valve seat, an external enlargement formed integrally with the intermediate portion of the aforesaid tube, a U- shaped thermostat having in one of its arms an opening receiving the last named end of said tube and bearing against said,en-' largement, a nut threaded on said end of the tube and contacting With said end of the thermostat to anchor the latter, the other end of said thermostat being formed With an opening alined with the tube and disposed contiguous to the aforesaid seat, a screw passed through the last named opening and having a conical end cooperating with said seat, and a pair of lock nuts."
