Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Braces, of which the following is a speciilcation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a rail brace and I declare the following to be a full, clear, concise and exact description thereof sufficient to enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in Which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an eiiicient rail brace that is simple and of durable construction. Thebrace is adapted for use more particularly on the curves of railroads, whereby to prevent the abnormal lateral strain of the train, as itpasses thereover, from spreading the rail or causing it to tip over.
The object will be apparent from the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the brace, showing an end view of a rail and a fragment of a cross tie; Fig. 2 is a perspective view, slightly enlarged of a base plate employed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view, slightly enlarged, of a hood employed; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a spike used. Fig. 5 is a vertical elevation of another form of spike used.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, a railroad cross tie is represented by -lupon which is supported the base plate 2 having a transverse recess at 3 for the disposition of the lower portion 4 of the rail 53. The plate 2 is'held in position upon the tie -1 by the spikes 6 having the pyramidal shaped heads 7, which fit flush, when driven home, with the upper surface of the base plate 2 provided with the counter sunk holes 8 for the purpose. The spikes 30 of the well known construction are driven into the square holes 9 and overlap the upper surface of the lower portion 4 of the rail, whereby to aid in holding said rail in position.
The heads 7 of the spikes 6 and the heads 31 of the spikes 30 are covered by the base flange 10 of the hood 11, whereby to prevent the spikes from withdrawing from theirset position in the tie. The base flange 10 is provided with counter sunk holes for the of the plate 2 whereby to aid in holding said hood in place. Theedges 17-17 of the hood 11, when the same is assembled, fit snugly against the intermediate portion 18 of the rail 5, whereby to prevent said rail from spreading or tipping over under lateral strain.
The hood 11 is held to the bracket 13 by the headed bolt 20, which passes through the ali'ned apertures in the hood and bracket, and is threaded at; one end for the reception of a nut 21. The nut 21 is locked in position upon the bolt 20 by a cotter pin 22 disposed through an aperture in the bolt 20.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a rail brace, a plate having a bracket, spikes for holding said plate in given position, a hood detachably mounted upon said. bracket, whereby to offset any lateral strain against said rail, and said hood adapted to cover the heads of said spikes, whereby to hold said spikes in set location. i
2. In a rail, brace, a plate having a bracket, a hood detachably secured upon said bracket, :1 bolt for securing s'aid hood to said bracket, whereby to brace said rail against lateral strain, an elongated recess in said plate, and a lug on said hood adapted to fit into said elongated recess, whereby to aid in assembling'said hood to said bracket.
3. In a rail. brace, a plate, a bracket formed upon said plate, an elongated recess in said plate, a hood having a lug adapted to fit into said recess, and a bolt and lock nut for holding said hood to said bracket, whereby to brace the rail against lateral movement.
4. In a rail brace, a plate having a recess for the disposition of the lower part of a rail, a'braoket formed in said plate, a hood adapted to be mounted upon said bracket, and a bolt and nut for holding said hood in assembled position upon said bracket, whereby to aid in offsetting any lateral strain against said rail.
5. In a rail brace, a plate having recess for the disposition of the lower part of a rail, an elongated recess in said plate, a
bracket formed on said 'plate, a hood 10 adapted to be detachably held to said signature.
