'irED STATES PATENT orrron.
FRITZ L. ANDREN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO S. KARPEN & 13303., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
TABLE-BED.
Application filed October 18, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ L. ANDREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to a combination table and bed; and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily operated structure of this type.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view showing the improved table-bed in open condition; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken vertical sectional view showing the structure in folded condition; Fig. 4:, an enlarged broken section taken as indicated at line 4, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a broken vertical section taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 3.
In the construction shown, A represents a table frame equipped with a top A which is adapted to be swung to an open position; and B a folding-bed connected with said table. The table may be of any approved construction. As shown, it has corner uprights or legs 1, which are connected at their upper ends by cross pieces 2, the rear legs being joined at their upper portions by a longitudinal side piece 3. The table-top is joined, by links 4, to the members 2.
The bed B comprises a head-section 5 which is rigidly mounted in the main frame A a short distance below its top; a footsection 6; and a spacing section 7. The spacin section is joined, by pivots 8, to the ends 0 the arms of the section 5; and the ends of the arms of the section 6 are joined, by pivots 9; to the spacing section. The legs 10 are connected with the arms of the section 6 and are provided with upward extensions joined, by links 11, to the spacing section 7.
A movable front piece 12 for the table frame is provided. This has its lower or rear edge fitted with a rod 13 which affords projections or studs 14 (Fig. 4) which engage slots or kerfs 15 in the front legs of the table. The outer or upper portion of the member 12 is connected, by links 16, with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916- Serial No. 795,865.
the arms of the bed-section 6 near the pivots 9. As shown in Fig. 4, the lower ends of the links 16 are connected by pivots 16 wlth bars 17 which are set in recesses in the ends of the board 12. The arrangement is such that the ends of the board 12 will form a close joint with the adjacent surfaces of the legs 1, when the structure is in folded condition.
At the joints between the spacing section and the main sections are provided the usual shoulders for giving the structure the necessary rigidity in the extended form, and for causlng the spacing section to turn with the foot section, after the foot section assumes a position at right-angles to the spacing section in the folding operation.
In the folding operation, the foot section 6 turns about the pivots 9 until the section 6 reaches a vertical position, whereupon the spacing section 7 turns about the pivots 8 until the section 6 is substantially parallel with the fixed section 5. In the first portion of the folding operation, the legs 10 are folded; and during the folding operation, the front piece 12 is swung and lifted to an elevated position, the links 16 riding upon the outer ends of the studs 9, as shown in Fig. 5, to effect this result.
The links 4 permit the table-top to be lowered to rest upon the frame A, and also enable the table-top to be swung to a vertical position, where its lower portion engages the rear legs of the frame. In this position, the clips 1, which serve as a connection between the links 4 and the table-top, rest upon the upper ends of the rear legs in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for olearness of understanding, and nounnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a bedsection mounted in the upper portion thereof, a spacing section pivotally attached at its inner portions, a foot-section, pivots connecting said foot-section to said spacing section, legs for the foot-section, a front piece movably connected with the frame, and links connecting said front piece to said foot-section, said links adapted to slide on the outer ends of said pivots and thereby elevate said front piece in the operation of folding the bed-structure.
2. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a bedsection fixedly secured in the upper portion thereof, a spacing section pivotally connected With said section, an outer section pivotally connected with said spacing section, a front piece for the frame having sliding connections with the front portion 10 FRITZ L. ANDREN.
