MUSIC-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
Application filed April 27, 1918. Serial No. 231,198.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, BENJAMIN G. MIL- LER and FLORENCE HAZEN MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Crete, in the county of Saline and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in music holders, specially adapted for use for holding sheet music on a piano or other instrument and to enable the sheet music to be readily turned, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of the character which is simple in construction and which is adjustable so that the same can be used for holding sheet music of various sizes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction,
combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sheet music holder constructed and arranged in accordance with our invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 4.4 of Fig. 3.
'Fig. 5 is a front elevation of another modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
The music holder comprises a pair of end bars and also connecting bars. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the end bars are indicated at 1 and the connecting bars are indicated at 2. The end bars may be made of wood or other suitable material and are covered 'on their inner sides and at the ends with felt 3 or other suitable cushioning material to prevent the holder from scratching the piano or other instrument on which it may be used.
Each connecting bar 2 is longitudinally adjustable and comprises a bar of telescopically related tubular members 4, 5, which are attached at their out ends to the end bars. Each member 5 is slidable in the member 4 and is provided with a plunger 6 which fits in the bore of the member 4. Each member 4 has a cap 7 secured thereon and provided with a central opening through which the member 5 extends.
By the provision of the longitudinally adjustable connecting bars, the music holder is adapted to be used for holding sheet music of various sizes.
Spring fingers 8 are also provided which are secured on the end bars 1 and are adapted to bear on the sheet music and to hold the same open and on the connecting bars between the end bars. The clamping fingers are secured to the end bars by thumb screws 9 which also form pivots, so the clamping fingers may be'turned and so that the clamping fingers may be caused to bear on the sheet music at any desired point and thus avoid covering any of the staves. The pivots 9 also enable the clamping fingers to be turned parallel with the ends and to bear thereon when it is desired to arrange the clamping fingers entirely out of the way.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the spring clamping fingers 8 are pivotally secured by thumb screws 9 on sleeves or loops 10 which sleeves 0r loops are slidable on guide rods 11 which are secured, as at 12, on the end bars of the holder. This construction enables the spring clamping fingers to be adjusted vertically on the end bars as well as to be turned in any desired direction.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the connecting bars 2* are integral and non-adjustable. Sleeves 13 are slidable longitudinally on the center connecting bar and the spring clamping fingers 14 are pivotally secured to the sleeves by thumb screws 15. Said thumb screws also serve to clamp the sleeves to the center cross bar in any desired adjustment, in accordance with the size of the sheet music to be used on the holder.
While we have herein shown a preferred embodiment of our invention we would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of our invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention we claim A music holder comprising a frame in cluding bars, sleeves slidably engaged upon said bars, and disposed at opposite sides of sleeves-may be secured in adjusted positions said frame, a spring clamping finger assoupon said bars.
ciated With each sleeve, and a thumb screw In testimony whereof We aifix our signa- 10 extending through each finger and the ass0- tures'.
ciated sleeve whereby said fingers will be pivoted upon the sleeves, said thumb screws BENJAMIN G. MILLER.
being engageable With the bars whereby said FLORENCE HAZEN MILLER.
