To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I, ARTHUR THOMAS KELLY, siding at Oklahoma, in the .county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Ice-Picks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to collapsible ice picks.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a device or tool of this character in which the pick may be folded back in an out-of-the-way position against the handle when the pick is not in use.

A further object of the invention is to provide means to hold the pick in either extended (operative) position or in folded position, as desired.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a handle adapted to constitute a carrier and scabbard for a numberof extra picks.

With the foregoing and other objects 1n view that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings z- Figure 1 is an edge view of an ice pick, embodying my improvements.

Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention and which drawings are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale, 1 designates the ice pick and 2 the handle. A pick head 7 is pivoted, as at 8, in the bearing head 3 and comprises a hollow substantially tubular sleeve 9 which receives the inner end of the pick 1. The pick head is further provided with a pivoted catch 10 adapted to engage and hold the pick in removable position therein, as shown.

The body p0rtion, as 11, of the pick head, is provided in its inner edge with a transverse recess 12 and in its outer or opposite edge with a corresponding recess13, either of which is adapted to receive the cross bar 14 of the locking member 15,the purpose of The longer bar 16 of the locking member 15 extends longitudinally of the handle and is formed on a gradual outward curve, said locking member being hinged or pivoted at the junction of its longer and shorter arms or bars, as at 17, to the bearing plate 4: in any suitable way. As shown, the outer or free end of the cross bar 14: of the locking member extends beyond the other bearing plate 4: of the bearing head 3 and terminates in an outwardly bent lug 18 which bears against the inner free end of a fiat metallic spring 19, the tendency of which is to hold the locking member in inoperative position.

In carrying out the invention, the bearing plate 1 is provided with an elongated extension 20 which bears against and is secured to the adjacent portion of the handle. Said extension 20 is provided at its longitudinal edges with the inwardly bent or inturned flanges 21 and forms a guide bearing for the slidable keeper or clip 22 which receives and works against the longer arm or bar of the locking member.

In practice, to hold the pick in either operative or folded position, as desired, the clip or keeper 22 is slid inwardly in the extension 20 of the bearing plate 4; which depresses the longer arm or bar of the locking member and throws the cross bar thereof outwardly into engagement with either the recess 12 or 13 in the pick head. as the case may be. To swing the pick from extended or operative position into folded position, or vice versa, the clip or keeper is moved outwardly in its guide bearing, when the cross bar of the locking member is disengaged from the pick head by the action of the spring 19. After the pick is positioned or swung into the position desired, the lockmg member is again secured or retained in normal or looking position byagain slid The tool is also provided at one side with a holder 23 formed with an inwardly bent hook 24 adapted to slip over the belt strap or the trousers for convenience in carrying.

The handle is also provided with a plurality of'longitudinal grooves -25to receive and hold a number of extra picks, and with a hollow removable screw threaded cap 26 at its inner end to provide ready and convenient access to the same.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the-construction, operation and advan tages of this invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changesin the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principles-or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.w-

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to securebyLetters Patent, is:
