AUTO-SHADE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
Application filed March 9, 1918. Serial No. 221,489.
Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto- Shades, of which the following is .a specification.
This invention relates to non-dazzling shields for automobile wind shields and the like and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient shade which is adapted to be secured to the wind shield of a motor vehicle, such as an automobile for preventing the driver of the automobile or motor vehicle from being blinded by the glare of the lights of a passing vehicle.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient means for detachably holding the shade upon the wind shield in any desired adjustable position.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a wind shield showing my improved shade secured thereto,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the shade and supporting means therefor, the casing being partly shown in sections,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
By referring to-the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates the wind shield which is provided with the usual glass panels 2. The wind shield 1 is also provided with a transversely extending upper bar 3 to which is detachably secured the shade supporting casing 4.
The shade supporting casing 4 comprises a tubular body having its respective ends 5 externally threaded for the purpose of receivin the caps 6. These caps 6 are provide with suitable apertures 7 for the purpose of receiving the ends of the shade roller 8. This shade roller is formed of the usual construction and is of the usual spring type.
A shade 9 is secured to the roller 8 and passes through a longitudinally extending slot 10 formed in the casing 4 as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
The lower end of the shade 9 is provided with a folded seam 11 in which seam 11 is mounted a reinforcing stick 12. This shade 9 is formed of translucent material such as colored celluloid although it of course should be understood that any suitable translucent material may be employed without departing from the spirit of the inventlon.
Each of the caps 6 is provided with a clamp 13 which clamp comprises a primary jaw 14 and an auxiliary jaw 15, these jaws being spaced with respect to each other as shown clearly in Fig. 3 for permitting the clamp to fit around the transversely extending rod" 3 of the Wind shield 1. The auxiliary jaw 15 is integrally secured to the primary jaw 14 by means of a bridge portion 16. An adjustable clamping plate 17 is carried by an adjusting screw 18 which adjusting screw 18 is threaded through the auxiliary jaw 15. The inner face of the primary jaw 14 is curved as indicated by the numeral 19 and the inner face 20 of the clamping plate 17 is also curved for permitting the jaw 14 and plate 17 to be clamped upon a support of various sizes. By having the clamp constructed as set forth, it should be understood that the shade may be attached to any form of a wind shield and it is not necessary to manufacture a special size clamp for each automobile upon which the device may be used.
It should be understood that the shade 9 may be adjusted upon the wind shield to suit the convenience of the operator and that the shade 9 may be raised or lowered to the desired position in the same manner as an ordinary window shade.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the operator may adjust the shade 9 to a suitable position in order that the dazzling lights of an approaching vehicle will not interfere with his vision and thereby permit the operator to safely pilot the vehicle which he is driving. It should be further understood that the wind shield may be adjusted to any suitable elevation without interfering with the shade 9.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, it will be seen that the translucent shade 9 is ada ted to be drawn down in back of the win shield so as to prevent the shade 9 from swinging away from the shield. The adjusting screws 18 are preferably operated from the front of the wind shield.
It should of course be understood that certain obvious detail mechanical changes maybe made in the present device without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as these changes fallwithin the scope of the appended c1aim.,
What is claimed is:
As a new article of manufacture, a shade for use upon wind shields of vehicles comprising a casing, a translucent shade carried by said casing, a clamp secured to each end of said casing and provided with a depending finger extending directly below the central axis of said casing, a rearwardly extending bridge portion extending substantially at right angles to said first mentioned finger, a depending finger secured to the outer end of said bridge portion and extending substantially parallel with respect to said first mentioned fin or, an adjusting screw threaded through sald last mentioned finger, a curved clamping plate secured to the inner end of said adjusting screw and adapted to firmly engage the frame of a windshield for detachably 'and adjustably holding said clamp and casing in engagement with said windshield.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
