Be it known that 1, MAIiLox LEWRY, a citizen of the United States. residing at Brooklyn. in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bedsteads and has for its object to provide a bedstead having an adjustable light formed thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a piece of furniture having a hollow tube construction an adjustable electric lamp carried by the tube.
'ith the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of a head piece of a bedstead. partly broken away, and embracing my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental section of a bed post showing the reverse side.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with a closure member removed.
Fig. 4c is a section on line Fig. 3, a battery and closure being in place.
Fig. is an enlarged detail view of a pivot member. and
Fig. (3 is a circuit diagram.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the draw-' ings in which 1 indicates the head of a bedstead having a post 2 provided with a rotatable tubular section 3 which carries an electric lamp 4 screwed into the socket 5 within said tube. The member 3 is also provided with a slot 6 through which projects the push button T for operating the switch 8 which is secured by a screw 9 to theinner wall 10 of said tube. A closure member 11 is held over the opening 12 in the opposite side of member 3 by means of screws 13 and 1+ threaded into screw openings 15 and 16 in the lugs 17 and 18.
Secured in any suitable manner in the two ends of the rotatable member 3 are disks '19 and 20 having central openings 21 and 22 through which the screws 23 and 2 Specification of Letters Patent.

projecting from the disks 25 and 26 secured in the sections 27 and 28 of the post 2. Lock nuts 29 and 30 are screwed onto said screws 23 and 24 after they are projected through said openings :21 and 22 and are secured in place by pins 31. The disks 19 and 20 and nuts and 30 are covered by any suitable insulating material 32 and To the insulator 32 is secured a conductive connector 34 adapted to be engaged by the carbon 35 of battery 36. The member 3 has a branch 37 which contacts socket To the insulator 33 is secured a conical wire spring 39 adapted to support the battery 36 and press its carbon 35 into contact with the member 34, and its terminal 40 seats against the zinc bottom 41 of said battery. A brass contact screw 42 is soldered to the lower convolution 43 of said spring in a position to be readily contacted by the inclined arm 44 of said switch 8 when t'orced in; said switch being made of resilient metal and so positioned on the wall 10 that its tension holds arm H normally out of contact with contact member 42. Secured in the slot 6 by means of a reduced portion 4;") is a slide 46 rounded inner head 47 which when moved up is adapted to slide under the inclined arm -14 and thence under the switch 8 and force arm -l-l in and against contact 42 and hold said members in contact until again moved down, thereby closing the lighting circuit and providing a pe rmancnt light. \Vhen only a flash light is required the button 7 is pushed and held in for the desired time. The inner metal lining 48 is conductive and the circuit is as follows: lamp contact 49, connector 34. battery 36. spring 39, switch 8. wall 10, lamp socket 5 and lamp contact 49. Secured to the wall 10 and closure member 11 are insulating segments 50 and 51 whereby the battery is held from contact with wall 10.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a-bedstead having a post, a rotatable section in the post and a lamp carried by said section. said section being tubular and a battery therein for feeding the lamp, a
lamp socket within the tube for the lamp, theupper and lower walls of said tube being insulated and contact members carried thereby whereby a lighting circuit may be completed.
2. In a bedstead having a post, a rotatable section in the post and a lamp carried by said section, said section being tubular and a battery therein for feeding the lamp, a lamp socket within the tube for the lamp, the upper and lower walls of said tube being insulated and contact members carried thereby, the upper COItilCtmember bein ri id and en a in sai amp.
3. A: device 0% th; character described including a post, an intermediate tubular section thereof, a battery therein, a lamp in circuit with .the battery and a conductive lining for the tube forming a part of the circuit, means for holding the battery from contact with said lining, said tube being rotatable, said tube having anopening to receive the battery and a. closure for the opening.
4:. A device of the character described including a post, an intermediate tubular section thereof, a battery therein, a lamp in circuit with the battery and a conductive lining for the tube forming a part of the circuit, means for holding the battery from contact with said lining, said tube being rotatable, said tube having an opening to receive the battery and a closure for the opening, said closure carrying a part of said means.
5. In a bedstead having a post, a rotatable section in the post and a lamp carried by said section, said section being tubular and a battery therein for feeding the lamp, a lamp socket withinthe tube for the lamp, the upper and lower walls of said tube being insulated and contact members carried thereby, the upper contact member being rigid and engaging said lamp, the lower contact member being aoone spring, a battery supported by said spring, and forced into contact with the upper contact member by said lower contact member.
6. In a bedstead having a post, a rotatable section in the post and a lamp carried by said section, said section being tubular and a battery therein for feeding the lamp, a lamp socket within the tube for the lamp, the upper and lower walls of said tube being insulated and contact members carried thereby, the upper contact member being rigid and engaging said lamp, the lower contact member being a cone spring, a battery supported by said spring, and .forced into contact with the upper contact member by said lower contact member, a conductive lining for said tube.
7. In a bedstead having a post, a rotatable section in the post and a lamp carried by said section, said section being tubular and a battery therein for feeding the lamp, a lamp socket within the tube for the lamp, the upper and lower walls of said tube being insulated and contact members carried thereby, the upper contact member belng rigid and engaging said lamp, the lower contact member being a cone spring, a battery supported by said spring, and forced into contact with the upper contact member by said lower contact member, a conductive lining for said tube, means for holding the battery from contact with said lining.
8. In a bedstead having a post, a rotatable section in the post and a lamp carried by said section, said section being tubular and a battery therein for feeding the lamp, a lamp socket within the tube for the lamp, the upper and lower walls of said tube being insulated and contact members carried thereby, the upper contact member being rigid and engaging said lamp, the lower contact member being a cone spring, a battery supported by said spring, and forced into contact with the upper contact member by said lower contact member, a conductive lining for said tube, means for holding the battery from contact with said lining, said tube having an opening to receive the battery and a closure for the opening.
9. In a bedstead having a post, a rotatable section in the post and a lamp carried by said section, said section being tubular and a battery therein for feeding the lamp, a lamp socket within the tube for the lamp, the upper and lower walls of said tube being insulated and contact members carried thereby, the upper contact member being rigid and engaging said lamp, the lower contact inem ber being a cone spring, a battery supported by said spring, and forced into contact with the upper contact member by said lower contact member, a conductive lining for said tube, means for holding the battery from contact with said lining, said tube having an opening to receive the battery and a closure for the opening, said closure carrying a part of said means.
10. A device of the character described including a tubular section, a battery therein, a lamp incircuit with the battery and a conductive lining for the tube, means for holding the battery from contact with said lining, said tube being rotatable, top and bottom closures for said section independent of the post.
11. A bed post having a rotatable section,
a battery carried by said section and a lamp in circuit with the battery, said section being tubular, a conductive lining for the tube forming a part of the circuit.
12. A bed post having a rotatable section, a battery carried by said section and a lamp in circuit with the battery, said section being tubular, a conductive lining for the tube supporting the battery, and forming a part forming a part of the circuit, a spring for of the circuit. 10 supporting the battery.
