WIRE-GUTTER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application filed October 21, 1918. Serial No. 259,007.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PETER Bonszoz, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at West Pullman, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wire cutter for swords and bayonets adapted for easily and quickly severing wires whenever found desirable such as during the march, the wire cutter adding no material weight to the carrying structure and in no manner retarding the intended use of the weapon.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a short-sword serviceable as a bayonet for detachably mounting upon al rifle barrel, a cutting means for wires being carried by the sword readily operated by the hand of the soldier when grasping the grip of the sword whether the latter is mounted upon the gun or detached therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a ready means carried by soldiers for easily and quickly cutting wires such as barbed wire entanglements, so that the progress of the soldier upon the line of march is greatly assisted by the removal of such barriers.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention detached from a riie partially broken away with the wire cutter open mounted upon a rifle barrel illustrated by dotted lines and with the wire cutter open.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 taken from the opposite edge of the sword,
Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views taken upon lines IV--IV and V-V of Fig. 1,
Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken upon lines VI-VI of Fig. 1 and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the wire cutting member detached.
The invention comprises what may be termed a short-sword provided with a grip 10 and a blade 11 projecting therefrom, the said grip being adapted for attachment to a rifle barrel such as 12in any desired manner for employing the blade 11 after the usual manner of a bayonet. A transverse guard 13 serviceable as a pummel is provided at the base of the blade 11 having a sleeve 14 at one end thereof for receiving the barrel 12 while a lug 15 upon said barrel is adapted to seat within a groove at the butt or free end of the grip 10, it being understoodthat a screw, not shown, may be threaded through a perforation 17 of the sleeve 14 for engaging the barrel 12 and securing the sword thereon.
The blade 11 is provided with a cutaway portion 18 at one side thereof adapted for the reception of a cutter 19 of substantially the same configuration as said cutaway portion. A shank 20 angularly projects from the inner end of the cutter 19 with a handle 21 at the other end of the shank in a plane parallel with the plane of the cutter.
The shank 20 is positioned through a transverse opening 22 within the pummel 13, the inner portion of the blade 11 being broken away as at 23 to accommodate the shank while a pocket 24 is provided in the grip 10 to receive the handle 21 when the cutter 19 is closed within the cutaway portion 18 of the blade 11.
A U-shaped leaf-spring 25 is provided in the pocket 24 having one end secured therein as at 26 while the opposite free end 27 of the spring bears against the inner face of the handle 21 for holding the handle outwardly of the pocket 24 with the cutter 19 open.
A pivot pin 28 is provided through the shank 20 and the opposite sides of the pummel 13, permitting the shank with its blade and handle to swing in opposite directions. A resilient clip 29 is carried by the grip 10 and projects forwardly over the pummel 13 and adjacent portion of the blade 11, which may be employed for different uses, such as suspending the sword from a belt.
The inner edge 30 of the cutter 19 is sharpened by beveling one side thereof which is adapted to cooperate with an oppositely beveled edge flange 31 of the cutaway portion 18 of the blade 11. By grasping the grip 10 of the sword, the end is readily pressed upon the handle 21 for closing the cutter 19, thereby severing a wire positioned between the cutting edges 30 and 31. Upon releasing the handle 21, the spring 25 automatically opens the cutter. A latch 32 is pivoted as at 33 to the butt end of the grip l0 adapted'for reception withinv an end slot 34 of the handle 21 when-the latter is closed within the Vpocket2ty andv at which times a button 34 at the opposite end vof the latch 32 fits over the opposite sides of the grip l() retaining the latch Within a slot 35 thereof and holding the handle 2l' within the pocket untiltheA latch is released. It will be. seen that when the sword is mounted upon the riie barrel l2, the cutter 19 may be readily operated by its handle 21, and this alsois. possible when the sword isgdetached from the rifle. The cutter 1,9 andhand'lecQl being readily retained in their inoperative posi? tionsrby the latch`32, the cutting' attachment atV suchtilnes does not detract from the usual use of the blade ll either as a, bayonet or device fron'r said pocket with a sharpened ange adjacent the inner Sdeof'the cutaway` portionLa shankpivoted through said4 slot, a cutter uponone end of; saidvshank, adapted for closing upon said cutting edge within the cutaway portionof the blade, anoperating handle for. the cutter upon the opposite end ofthe shank in the same planewith the cutter and adapted forclosing within said pocketl when the cutter'fis closed'.v

A device etI the class described comprising a grip, having a longitudinal pocket in-one side thereof, a bayonet blade projectingfrom said grip, a transverse puinmel upon sai'dgrip at the baseof theblade,V the blade, puininel andV handle having a slot therethrough, .and the blade having a cutaway side portion at theopposite side of, the
