STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application led April 26, 1918. Seria1No.230,902.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, .have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures, and more particularly to closures therefor-the object of the invention being to provide means for removably securing the cap or closure in place on the bearing sleeve in a manner to permit its quick removal to facilitate inspecting and testing of the bolt.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the-accompanying drawings; Figure l is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements; Fig. 2 is a sectional view; Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view partly in elevation, illustrating a modification.
y l represents a bearing sleeve having anv interior curved face 2 forming a bearing for the rounded .head 3 of a staybolt l--said sleeve being also provided, at its outer end, with an outwardly annular flange 5.
A cap or closure 6 engages a recessed seat 7 at the outer end of the bearing sleeve and may be made concave over the head of the staybolt. The cap 6 is also made with an angular head 8 to receive a wrench and the peripheral portion of said cap is threaded as at 9 to enter an internally threaded ring or locking member 10. This annular locking member may be made with a hexagonal or other angular external configuration to receive a wrench and it is provided with a plurality of jaws 11 having'lips 12 to engage under the annular flange 5 at the outer end of the bearing sleeve, when the parts are assembled, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
It is apparent that when the parts have been assembled, and the cap is turned relatively to the locking member (or vice versa) said cap will be tightly pressed against its seat and the jaws of the clamping member will become tightly clamped to the flanged outer' end of the bearing sleeve. Reversal of operation of these parts will permit the quick removal of the cap by moving said cap and the locking ring laterally from the bearing sleeve and thus facilitate testing of the staybolt and the parts may be as quickly re-assembled and secured.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the cap or closure is made in the form of a disk 13 having a peripheral flange 14. threaded externally to receive the locking member and having a lip 15 to overlie the latter.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing member having an annular flange at its outer end, of an externally threaded cap seated on said sleeve and having a part to receive a wrench, and a locking member threaded on the cap and provided with jaws to engage the annular flange on the bearing sleeve, said jaws being constructed and adapted to permit the cap and locking member to be removed laterally from the end of the bearing sleeve.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
