OLIVER WILBURN THOMAS, OF PANA, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
Application filed January 23, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER N. THOMAS, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pana, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Wrenches,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and has particular reference to the class of wrenches of the cross-handle type.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the greatest possible gripping effect upon the object desired to be operated upon may be attained.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby various adjustments of the jaws with respect to each other may be easily and quickly made.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device so constructed as to readily permit the attachment of a'. wire cutting device to the same without materially altering or changing any of the essentiallelements. 3
A further object is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is strong, durable, cheap to manufacture and reliable in operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of 1 taken on line 22,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation of the device, the same being shown partly in section,
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the device showing the attachment of a wire cutter thereto, N
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same showing the jaws in a closed position with respect to each other, and,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary edge view of the same.
In the drawings, attention being called to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, wherein is shown the preferred form of my inventionthe numeral Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Serial No. 213,412,
10 indicates an elongated handle portion, one end of which is machined to form a screw-driver as shown at 11, while the other end is provided with an angularly disposed head or jaw 12, one edge or face of which is provided with a plurality of gripping teeth as shown at 13. The handle 10 is provideo with a plurality of openings 14, each of which are connected one with the other by means of walls or passages 15, the width of each being slightly less than the diametrical length of the opening 14. A second handle 16 provided with depending flanges 17 is secured to the first mentioned handle 10 by means of a screw-threaded pivot 18 one end of which is slightly reduced and provided with screw-threads as shown at 19 while upon the other end there is disposed an enlarged head 20. This pivot 18 is passed through an opening 21 provided by one of the flanges '17, through the opening 14. carried by the handlelO, thus bringing the screw-threaded portion 19 into engage ment with a screw-threaded opening 22 carr ed by the other flange 17 as shown. It will be noted that each side of the pivot 18 is slightly flattened as shown at 23 and that the faces 23 of the pivot 18 assume a rightangle position with respect to the handle 10 when the enlarged head 20 is brought firmly into engagement with the adjacent flange 17 as shown.
In forming the jaw 24: I utilize the enlarged portions of the flanges 17 as shown at 25 by securing therebetween a block 26, the face of which is serrated or provided with teeth as shown at 27. I have shown this block'as being secured between the enlarged portions '25 of the flanges 17 by means of rivets 28 or the like but I wish it understood however that this might be retained therebetween by welding if so desired.
29, which device comprises a reciprocatory cuttin member 30, one end of which is beveled as shown at 31. This reciprooatory member is slidably carried within a pair of yokes 32 secured to the handle 10 as shown.
In order to retain the member 30' normally in the position shown in Fig. 4 there is pro vided a spring 38, one end of which is con nected to the handle as shown, while the other end is adapted to engage the reciprocatory member. cutting edge 31 there is provided a recess 34, one edge of which is beveled to form a cutting edge 35 adapted to co-act with the cutting edge 81 carried by the reciprocatory member 30 In use, the operation of the preferred embodiment of my invention is as follows: The
' object to be operated upon, I have shown in this instance a pipe P, is inserted between the faces of the jaws 12 and 2 1 of the device and is clamped therein as will readily be understood when considerin the disclosure as shown in Fig. 1. Shou d it be desired to vary the distance between the two jaws this may be done by rotating the pivot 18' to such a position as will brii'ig the faces 23, carried thereby, in alinement with the passages 15 whereupon the pivot 18 may be fied form of the device as shown in Figs. 3
to '6 inclusive, I need only describe the op- In proximity to the bevel eration of the wire-cutting device 29, which operation is as follows: Should it be desired to sever a wire, the same is inserted into the recess 34 and the handle 16 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the reciprocatory member 80 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 5, thereby severing the wire carried within the recess 34 as is apparent from the drawings taken in connection with the specification of the same. v
It is to be understood that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States,is:
The combination with a wrench having a pair of pivotally connected members each having a wrench j aw, one of said members having a recess formed therein to provide a cuttlng edge, the other of said members being provided with a cam face formed on a continuation of the face of the jaw thereof; of a reciprocating member provided with a cutting edge and having sliding engagement with said cam face whereby the reciprocating member is moved with respect to said recess upon the actuation of one of said members to produce a cooperating shearing action between the two cutting edges, a plurality of yokes for guiding said reciprocat-r ing element, and spring tension means for retaining the reciprocating member normally in a retracted position.
