ADJUSTABLE OIL-SPOUT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. KRor'rA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewaunee, in the county of Kewaunee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Adjustable OilSpouts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in oil spouts, and particularly to a device of this character intended for application to and use upon quart, gallon, or other sized containers in which oil and other lubricants are now commonly packed and offered for sale it being a purpose of my invention to provide a spout which is made adjustable to thus adapt the device for use upon cans having different sizes of pouring openings.
A further object lies in so, constructing the fastening means for the spout that parts thereof will engage with the external threads as provided around the filling opening of the usual oil storage receptacle and which thus allows for turning down and tightening of the parts of the spout against the can structure and around the pouring opening to secure a liquid tight joint and connection of the spout.
' With the above and other objects in view, which will be in part described and in' part understood from the specification, drawings, and claims, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the structure as disclosed in Fig. 1.
While some brands of oil come packed in cans of convenient size for hand use and with a nozzle or spout provided as a part of the can, the supplying of this spout with each container means that the cost of handling and packing the oil or lubricant is quite materially increased and in consequence the selling price must be advanced. Where such a spout is not provided, it is necessary to pour the oil from the can in standard lubricant containers.
which it is sold, into a hand oil can, or to use a funnel where the lubricant is to be poured directly into an oil cup or other container for lubricant, and not only does this mean that a funnel must be kept always at hand, but that this method of use is inconvenient and results in quite a material wastage of the lubricant. With the above in mind, I have provided an adjustable oil spout structure which can befitted in place and secured in a leak-proof connection in conjunction with practically any oil can or container in which the lubricant is packed and sold, and which spout can be readily removed and used upon other oil containers when the contents of one container have been exhausted.
The spout 1, which is preferably tapered throughout its length and-which may have the outer end thereof curved or straight, has the inner end at 2 made sufiiciently small that it will fit Within substantially any size of pouring opening as provided on A diskshaped sheet metal piece 3 is mounted or otherwise secured around the lower extremity of the spout and slightly up from the end2, thereof, and this disk has the arms 4 and 5 extending laterally therefrom in opposed relation, the arms being provided at their outer ends with the brackets 6 and 7 which have screw-threaded openings provided therethrough and extending substantially in alinement and horizontally, as the parts are viewed in Fig. 1, the arms 4 and 5 having the body portions thereof cut away to provide the slots 8 and 9 adjacent these bracket portions 6 and 7 A collar 10 is mounted around the spout 1 somewhat above the disk 3 and has the bearing arms 11 and 12 provided substantially in vertical alinement with the arms 4 and 5 of the disk. - Adjustable arms 13 and 14 have bearing ears formed at the upper end thereof and bearing pins 15 and 16 are'mounted through the bearing ears of these adjustable arms and through the bearing arms 11 and 12 to thus pivotally mount the adjustable arms 13 and 14 in conjunction with the collar 10. The lower extremities of the adj ustable arms 13 and 14 are received through the slots 8 and 9 of the arms 4 and 5 of the disks 3, and are then bent substantially at right angles to provide the can gripping extensions 17 and 18. These extensions 17 and 18 are preferably widened out as is better shown in Fig. 2, and then on their inner ends have notches or recesses 19 and 20 provided, these notches or recesses being substantially as an are taken around the center of the lower end 2 of the spout. At their inner ends these can engaging extensions 17 and 18 are given a chisel end formation to thus provide a single screw-thread.
Springs 21 and 22 are mounted around the bearing pins 15 and 16 and have their ends engaging with the spout 1 and on the inner sides of the adjustable arms 13 and 14 so that they resiliently exert pressure against these adjustable arms to swing the same outwardly around their mountings on the pivot pins. As has been stated, the bearing portions 6 and 7 have screw-threaded openings therethrough and the adjusting screws 23 and 24, which have the milled or knurled heads, are mounted in the threaded openings of the brackets so that by manual manipulation of these clamp screws 23 and 24 the adjustable arms 13 and 14 will be moved in and in consequence the inner edges of the can gripping extensions 18 and 17 will be brought closer to the end 2 of the spout. A packing washer 25, which is of leather or other suitable material, is mounted around the end 2 of the spout and on the'under side of the disk 3.
In the use of the structure, the closing cap 25 of the oil can 26 will be removed and with the clamp screws 23 and 24 ad. justed to allow considerable spread of the adjustable arms 13 and 14, the device of my invention is fitted to the oil can with the end 2 of the spout 1 received in the pouring opening thereof, the packing washer 25 resting on the structure of the can around the pouring opening and on the outer edge of the threaded nipple from which the closing cap has been removed. The clamp screws 23 and 24, are now tightened in against the adjustable arms 13 and 14 and in consequence these arms are swung in against the resilient force of the springs 21 and 22 to bring the edges 19 and 20 thereof against the outer and threaded surface of the nipple from which the shaft has been taken. When the clamping screws 23 and 24 have been tightened down sufficiently that the can gripping extensions 17 and 18 are brought snugly against the threads of this nipple and'the edges 19 and 20 thereof have gripped within the threads of the nipple at the pouring opening, the spout structure as an entirety is turned sufliciently to draw down the packing washer 25 tightly against the outer end of the nipple due to the fact that the edges 19 and 20 are engaged in the threads of the nipple, and thus the spout is secured in place upon the oil can and a leakp-roof connection is established. When the device is to be removed from the can, it will be understood that it is only necessary to loosen the clamp screws 23 and 24 sufficiently that the gripping extensions 17 and 18 are disengaged from the nipple of the can, and then the structure as an entirety can be bodily removed.
From the above it will be seen that I have 'provided an adjustable oil spout which can be connected for use upon quart, gallon, or other oil storage receptacles in which oil is now commonly packed and sold, and which spout is of such construction that all possibility of the oil spilling or leaking out is precluded, while at the same time the connection with the oil can is made only in a temporary manner thus allowing for use and reuse.
Vhile, in the foregoing, I have described a specific embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that in practice, I do not limit myself to such specific details but may resort to practical modifications falling within the scope of the inven tion as defined in the appended claims.
I claim r- 1. An adjustable oil spout including in combination with a substantially tubular spout, adjustable arms pivotally mounted on said spout and provided withcan gripping extensions, and means to tighten the can gripping extensions to mount and secure the spout upon an oil can.
2. An adjustable oil spout including in combination with a substantially" tubular spout having a disk mounted adjacent the inner end thereof and which disk has arms extending therefrom, adjustable arms pivotally mounted on the spout adjacent the outer end thereof and having their inner ends provided with can gripping extensions and positioned to swing adjacent the disk, and clamp screws carried by the arms of the disk positioned to engage with the adjust able arms and tighten the same to mount the spout upon a can.
3. An adjustable oil spout including in combination with a substantially tubular spout. a disk mounted adjacent the inner end of said spout and having slotted arms tending therefrom, a collar mounted around the spout at a point spaced from the disk and said collar having bearing arms thereon, adjustable arms pivotally mounted on the bearing arms of the collar and extended through the slots of the arms .of the disk, said adjustable arms on the free ends thereof having can gripping extensions, and clamp screws carried-by the arms of the disk to engage with the adjustable arms and swing the same in to bring the can gripping extensions into clamping engagement with parts of a can.
4. An adjustable oil spout including in combination with a substantially tubular spout, a disk mounted adjacent the inner end of said spout and having slotted arms extending therefrom, a collar mounted around the spout at a point spaced from the disk and said collar having bearing arms thereon, adjust-able arms pivotally mounted on the bearing arms of the collar and extended through the slots of the arms of the disk, said adjustable arms on the free ends thereof having can gripping extensions, clamp screws carried by the arms of the disk to engage with the adjustable arms and swing the same in to bring the can gripping extensions into clamping engagement with parts of a can, and springs mounted to normally resiliently hold the adjustable arms out of contact with the cam except when moved in by tightening of the clamp screws.
5. An adjustable oil spout including in combination with a substantially tubular spout, a disk mounted adjacent the inner end of said spout and having slotted arms extending therefrom, a collar mounted around the spout at a point spaced from the disk and said collar having bearing arms thereon, adjustable arms pivotally mounted on the bearing arms of the collar and extended through the slots of the arms of the disk, said ad ustable arms on the free ends thereof having can gripping extensions, clamp screws carried by the arms of the disk to engage with the adjustable arms and swing the same in to bring the can gripping extensions into clamping engagement with parts of a can, and a packing washer mounted around the inner end of the spout and on the inner side of the disk.
6. An adjustable oil spout including in combination with a substantially tubular spout, a disk mounted adjacent the inner end of said spout and having slotted arms extending therefrom, a collar mounted around the spout at a point spaced from the disk and said collar having bearing arms thereon, adjustable arms pivotally mounted on the bearing arms of the collar and extended through the slots of the arms of the disk, said adjustable arms on the free ends thereof having can gripping extensions, the gripping extensions on their inner ends having recesses provided and being sharpened to a chisel edge within the recesses, a packing washer mounted around the inner end of the spout and on the inner side of the disk, bracket portions provided on the arms of the disk, springs mounted substantially at the point of pivot of the adjustable arms and bearing between the spout and said arms to normally resiliently force the arms outwardly, said bracket portions having screw-threaded openings therethrough, and clamp screws mounted through the threaded openings to-be tightened against the adjustable arms to swing the can gripping extensions thereof down to tighten against parts of a can on which the spout is to be mounted.
7. A device of the class described compris ing a spout, arms carried by said spout, means for holding said arms in an extended position, and clamping means for moving said arms into gripping engagement with a can.
8. A device of the class described comprising a spout, arms carried thereby, yieldable means for normally holding said arms in an extended position relative to said spout, guiding means for said arms, and clamping members carried by said guiding means and engaging said arms for forcing said arms into gripping engagement with a can.
9. An adjustable oil spout including in combination with a spout, adjustable arms carried by said spout, means for normally holding said arms in an extended position, each arm provided with an inwardly extended can gripping portion, a guiding member carried by said spout, said arms extending through said guiding member, adjustable clamping screws carried by said guiding member and engaging the lower ends of said arms, for forcing said arms into gripping engagement with a supporting can.
