STEAM-TURBINE.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 15, 1917. Serial No. 148,867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RUssELL LANG, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Holm Foundry, Cathcart, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful" Improvements in Steam-Turbines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, and
to letters or figures of re erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 5
The present invention relates to steam turbines of the impulse, single-pressure-stage, multiple-velocity-stage, axial-flow type, 2'. 6., turbines in which the steam'is expanded to the full extent intended in a single set of nozzles and is thereafter passed in succession, and in a direction generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the turbine wheel, through two or more rings of vanes arranged radially on the turbine wheel, being directed from one to the other of the rings of revolving vanes by stationary guide vanes.
It is convenient in the case of small steam turbines of the type above mentioned to support the guide vanes on a member connected to the front of the turbine casing. It is also desirable to connect to the front of the casing the box or chest which supplies steam to the nozzles; and, in a construction heretofore in use, it has been necessary .to detach the guide-vane-supporting member from the casing whenever the steam-nozzlesupply box is detached from the latter.
The object of the present invention is to enable the guide-vane-supporting member (which will hereinafter be referred to as the guide segment) to be connected to, and supported from, the front of the turbine casing in such a manner with respect to the attachment of the steam-nozzle-supply box (which will hereinafter be referred to as the nozzle box) and of the member carrying the nozzles that the nozzle box and nozzles can be removed without interfering with the guide segment.
My invention-which consists in means relating to the supporting of the guide segment and nozzle box and nozzles-will be described in the following specification and more explicitly defined in the annexed claims. Theaccompanying drawings illustrate the inventlon. r a
Figure 1 is a section through the turbine casing and nozzle box according to one convenlent construction according to my invention, the section being made by a vertical plane which passes through the axis of rotation of the turbine wheel. Fig. 2 is, as regards its left-hand portion, a cross section on the line X X of Fig. 1, and, as regards its right-hand portion, an
elevation of the turbine casing looking from left to right in Fig. l and with-the nozzle box removed.
Fig. 3 is a corresponding view to Fig. 1 ani illustrates an alternative construction, an
Fig. & is a corresponding view to Fig. 2.
In both constructions a is the turbine casing', 5 the nozzle box, and c the nozzle-containing member in which are formed the nozzles n. (Z, (Z are the guide vanes, and e the guide segment. h, h are bolts or studs which secure the nozzle box and the nozzle member to the exterior of the front or steamadmission side of the turbine casing, the nozzle box and nozzle member being formed with flanges r and s respectively to receive these bolts, and the casing being formed with a facing q to receive the flange s. f, g are bolts or threaded pins which pass through the casing and secure the guide segment thereto, being provided with holding members, 0. 9., heads a or nuts 1), on the outside of the casing. The flange s is formed with U-shaped recesses m, as illustrated, to provide room for the nuts 39 or heads a. y, j are washers employed for convenience of manufacture for the purpose of adjusting,
the position of the guide segment in an axial direction. 7
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the pins f, f are threaded and screwed into tapped holes in the guide segment, the heads u of the pins being on the outside of the casing. In the construction shown in Figs. 8 and 4 the bolts 9, g are passed through holes in the guide segment from the inside and secured by nuts 9 outside the turbine casing.
By means of the construction above de- P te'nteu Sept. 17.11918;
scribed, the nozzle box and nozzle member can be removed Without interfering with the attachment of the guide segment. It Will be seen that the tWo constructions illustrated are in general the same. Either construction eould be modified in details Without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my lIlV6Ilt-lOl1,WhLt I claim new and desire to secure Let ters Patent is 1. The combination, with the casing of an impulse, single-pressure-stage, multiple-velocity-stage, axial-flow steam turbine, of a steam-nozzle-supply box, a nozzle-containing member, means for securing the said nozzle box and nozzle member to the exterior of the steam-admission side of the said casing, a guiCle-Vane-supporting segment, bolts securing this guide segment tothe inside of'the same portion of the casing, these bolts passing through the casing and being independent of the means for attachment of the nozzle box and nozzle member, holding'members for these bolts on the outside of the casing, and recesses in the said nozzle member to accommodate the said holding members.
2. The combination, With the casing of an impulse, singlepressure-stage, multiple-veloeity-stage, axial-flow steam turbine, of a nozzle-containing member, a flange on the said member, a steam-nozzle-supply box, bolts securing the said nozzle member by the said flange to the exterior of the steam-admission side of the said casing and at the same time securing the said nozzle boX to the casing up against the said flange, a guidevane-supporting segment, independent bolts securing this guide segment to the inside of the same portion of the casing, these bolts passing through the casing, holding members for these bolts on the outside of the easing, and recesses in the said flange to accommodate the said holding members.
I hereby s gn my name to this specifica- CHARLES RUSSELL LANG.
