To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID WV. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain. useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Tighteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. i

This invention relates broadly to improve ,ments in that class of inventions known as beds and more particularly has reference to a bed spring tightener.

As the primary aimtand object the present invention contemplates the provision of a device operatively connected tothe side and end rails of a bed sprlng frame for movingone of the end rails on the side rails in a direction away from the opposite end rail so as to consequently tighten the spring itself which is connected to the end rails and prevent the spring from sagging.

More particularly, the present invention consists in the provision of a device of the character that is simple in construction, strong and durable and effective is its operation.

Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device attached to a bed spring frame;

Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line &-4: of Fig. 3 in the direction in which the arrows point;

Fig. 5is a longitudinal section of the invention.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all the above described views, to

indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a bed spring frame consisting-of spaced parallel side rails 1 and 2, an end piece 3 the re spectiveends of which are rigidly connected to theadjacent side rails by fastening devices 4. Another end piece 5 is employed and has connected to it depending from the under surface adjacent the respective ends, substantial U-shaped' brackets 6 to permit of sliding engagement of the end pieces 5 with the opposite endportions of the side rails 1 and 2. 7 As indicated in the drawings the end pieces are disposed on the upper'surfaces of the side rails and have their extremities projecting slightly beyond the outer surfaces of the side rails so as to support the frame in position on a bedstead. A bed spring 7 has its respective ends rigidly connected to the upper surface of the end pieces 3 and 5.

With a view toward providing improved means for tightening the spring so as to remove any slack therein and to prevent, the spring from sagging to any great extent rods 8 are employed, the inner end portions 9 of which depend at right angles to the main portions and are positioned adjacent the inner surface of the side rails 1 and 2 while the extreme terminals extend at right angles as at 10 to the right angular portions 9 and are anchored in suitable openings 11 in the side rails. The outer ends of the right angular terminals 10 are counter sunk in the outer surface of the side rails so as not to interfere in the application of the bed spring frame. The outer terminals of the main portions 8 are threaded as indicated by the numeral 12 and are slidably engaged by transverse openings 13 in the movable end pieces 5. Washers 14 are disposed about the threaded portions and in proximity to the inner surfaces of the end pieces 5 while nuts 15 are adjustably mounted on the threaded portions 12 and it will be appreciated when the nuts are adjusted toward the outer ends of the rods 8 the end pieces 5 will be slid outwardly on the side rails 1 and 2 so as to consequently tighten the spring 7 carried by the end pieces.

It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detail description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.

As many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely diiferent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in-the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the inven tion herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language -might be said to .falltherebetween.

Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent, is:
