Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CIIAPIN A. CART- wiuorrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in motors especially adapted for use as water motors, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is simple and efficient in operation and is also capable of use as a water meter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which;

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a cylinder 7 having a piston 8 reciprocating therein, said piston 8 being provided with a hollow piston rod 9 operating through a stuffing box 10 in one end of cylinder 7 A valve chamber 11 is arranged abutting the opposite end of cylinder 7 and is provided at one side with an inlet passage 12 branched to communicate with inlet ports 13 and let and on the other side with an exhaust passage 15 communicating with an enlarged central exhaust port 16. A cylindrical reciprocatory main valve 17 is arranged in valve chamber 11 and is provided adjacent its ends with annular supply passages 18 and 19 arranged to register alternately with the ports 13 and 14 as said main valve is reciprocated, as will be readily understood, the passages 18 and 19 being in constant communication with each'other through the medium of a passage 20 passing through valve 17, as shown. The main valve 17 is also provided with a. central annular exhaust passage 21 in constant communication with exhaust port 16 and arranged to communicate alternately with ports 22 and 23 leading to opposite ends of cylinder 7 to effect exhaust of the ends of said cylinder at the proper times, as will be readily understood. An auxiliary valve 24 is arranged to reciprocate in a central passage 25 extending through main valve 17, said auxiliary valve being provided with central passages 26 and 27 extending into the ends thereof. Annular ports 28 and 29 are arranged in communication with the inner ends of the passages 26 and 27 respectively, and are positioned to register alternately with ports 30 and3l communicating with central exhaust passage 21 in the main valve 17. Ports 32 and 33 lead from the outer portions of passage 25 to the respective annular passages 18 and 19 in locations to be alternately opened by reciprocations of auxiliary valve 24. Centrally perforated washers or cushions 34 are arranged over the ends of passage 25 in position to contact with bosses 35 at the respective ends of valve chamber 17 so as to gradually close communication with the central openings in the cushions 34 as the valve 17 approaches the ends of its movements. Auxiliary valve 24 is connected with one end of an operating rod 36 op erating in hollow piston 9 and provided with stops 37 and 38 arranged to contact with the respective ends of the hollow piston rod 9 and limit the movements of rod 36 relatively thereto.
In operation, water under pressure enters through inlet 12, and-in the positions of the parts shown, passes through port 13 and annular passage 18 to port 22, thus driving the piston S in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. II. At the same time, water under pressure is admitted through port 32 and passage 25 to the corresponding end of s, am

Art the same time port 32 is closed and port 23 thrown into registration with port 30 to exhaust the eorrespoiuling end oi valve chamber 11 to permit of this motion, as will be readily understood. The shifting of main valve 1'7 thus caused throws port in communication with supply passage 19 and port in communication with exhaust passage. 21. thus reversing the motion ot piston 8, as will be readily understood. firs cushion 3i: approaches boss the central passage in said cushion is gradually clpsed, thus gradually checking the motion ot the valve which tends to prevent knocking thereof and consequently promotes easy running of the parts. its piston 8 approaches the other end of its reverse motion the auxiliary valve is again shifted to the position shoivn in Fig. ll. thus etlecting reversal or the piston which action is continued as long as water under pressure is supplied.
By this arrangement, it will be observed that no dead center can occur and that. a smooth and reliable operation is effected. The operative motions of both the auxiliary and main valve are in the same direction as the concurrent motion of the cylinder piston, thus minimizing loss of power due to unnecessary friction and momentum of the parts. This arrangement also greatly simplifies the construction, minimising the number of parts and permitting the use ot a central exnaust in the valve. It will also be observed. that the quantity of water passing through the motor at each reciprocation thereof is a constant quantity so that the number of reciprocations bears a direct proportion to the quantity passing through the motor, so that the motor also constitutes an accurate meter for measuring the quantity of water passing therethrough.
While 1 have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set tortlnbut desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A valve mechanism comprising a chamber having inlet and exhaust ports; a valve movable in said chamber and comprising a central chamber adapted to register with said exhaust port and end chambers adapted for alternate registration with said inlet port; and means for automatically equalizing the pressure in said end chambers, sub stantially as described.

and closing said ports having a central chamber; a supplemental valve for controlling passage through said chamber to operate said valve; and means for automatically and periodically restricting the passage through said chamber to cushion said valve, substantially as described.
3. A motor comprising a cylinder and a reciprocating piston therein. in combination. with a valve chamber adjacent said cylinder and connected thereto by ports, a main valve reciprocating in said chamber and provided with a centrally arranged exhaust port, annular supply passages adjacent the opposite ends of said valve, a passageway in said valve connecting the same there being a longitudinally disposed passageway in said main valve, an auxiliary valve mounted for reciprocation in said passageway, ports connecting said passageway with the exhaust and the supply passages and an operative connection between said piston and said auxiliary valve whereby movement of the termer actuatcs the latter to shift the main valve and to cushion the same, substantially as described.

A motor comprising a cylinder, a reciprocating piston therein and a hollow piston-rod for said piston, in combination with a valve chamber arranged in alinement with said cylinder and connected thereto by ports, said valve chamber being provided with spaced supply ports, and a centrally positioned exhaust port, a main valve slidable in said valve chamber and provided adjacent its ends with supply passages arranged to register alternately with said cylinder ports and connected by means of an open passage in the main valve, and a central exhaust passage in constant communication with the exhaust port in the valve chamber, there being a central passage extending through said main valve, an auxiliary valve slidable in said passage and provided with passages extending inwardly from the ends thereof there being ports communicating with said passages at a distance from the ends of said auxiliary valve arranged to register with corresponding port-s leading to the exhaust passage in the main valve, there also being ports in the main valve controlled by said auxiliary valve arranged to connect the central passage in the main valve and the ends of the valve chamber with the annular supply ports of the main valve. and a rod cohneeted with said auxiliary valve and having lost motion in said hello piston-rod, substantially as described.
5. A motor comprising a cylinder and a reciprocating piston therein and a hollow piston rod for said piston ope 'ating through one end of said cylinder; a valve chamber located adjacent the other end of said cylinder and connected thereto by ports, said valve chamber being provided. with entry passage branching and leading to two distanced supply ports, and an exhaust passage comnmnieating with a centrally positioned exhaust port; a cylindrical main valve slidable in said valve chamber and provided adjacent its ends with annular supply passages arranged to register alternately with said cylinder ports and connected together by means of an open passage in said main valve, and a central exhaust passage in constant communication with the exhaust port in said valve chamber, there being a central passage passing through said main valve; an auxiliary valve slidable in said central passage and provided With passages extending inwardly from the ends thereof, the inner ends of the passages in said auxiliary valve being provided With ports arranged to reg- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ister with corresponding ports leading to the exhaust passage in the main valve, there being also ports in said main valve controlled by said auxiliary valve arranged to connect the central chamber in the main valve and the ends of the valve chamber With the annular supply ports of the main valve, and a rod connected with said auxiliary valve and having lost motion in said 7 hollow piston substantially as described.
