Be it known'that I, AUGUST L. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven in the county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain ,nev' and useful Improvements in Fishpoles,
of which the following is a specification, reference being vhad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a new and improved fish pole, having for its object, among other things, to construct a fish pole composed of telesc'opic sections,.preferably metal, as well as to produce such a device of the fewest possible'parts, that may be economically constructed and readily assembled, and further, to provide means permitting the line to run internally through the length of the pole.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the fish pole, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures;
Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improved vfish pole, with portions thereof broken away;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view, taken upon line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view thereof showing the several parts in their relative positions when the' pole is collapsed;
Fig. 4 is'a side view of one of the end blocks, and
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a my invention.
In the practice of the invention, as herein shown, my improved fish pole consists of plug used with three sections, but a greater or less number of sections may be provided as desired.
The .numeral l designates the handle section, having a neck portion 2 of reduced size, and the opposite end threaded at 3, with a cap 4 thereon, the same b eing held against accidental movement in its locked position by the spring member 5,- fixed thereto, having a detent 6 thereon that enters an opening in the Wall of the handle member, as it registers therewith.
Slidably mounted within the handle section is the intermediate section 7, which is slightly tapered throughout its length, and
within the intermediate section is the end sectlon 8, which is similarly tapered.
Within the inner ends of the intermediate and end sections is a locking device, comprising a block 9 having a longitudinal groove 10 in one side thereof, which terminates at its opposite ends in the rounded throats 11, and having a recess 12 in one side thereof diametrically opposite the recess 10, the same being shorter in length than said body member and within which is mounted a spring 13 having a detent 14 at lts free end. The detent 14, as shown, engages an opening in the intermediate section 7, whereby the block 9 is held stationary with relation to said section and by depressing the detent to a position below said opening the block is removable for the purpose of cleaning or threading' the line through the pole. When the section 7 is drawn out to its full length, the detent 14 entersthe opening 15 in the .handle section 1 and prevents movement of the intermediate section 2 within the handle, until the detent 14 is manually depressed so as to be disengaged from said recess 15, at which time said sections may be moved in relation to each other. are obtained with the detent in connection with the `end section 8, the same entering the opening 16 in the intermediate section.A The detents and engaging devices as shown are in substantial alinement with each other; consequently .when the locking blocks 9 vare engaged they are, of their own accord,
placed in substantially an alined position; therefore the grooves therein, through which the line passes, are likewise in substantial alinement.
In the outer end of thel end section is a block 17 with an opening 19 therethrough eSrminating at each end in a flaring throat When extended, the fish line passes from the reel 2O through the opening 21 in one side of the handle section 1, through the recess 10 in the blocks 9, and through the open- 'ing 19 in the block 17.
The flaring throats in the ends of each of these blocks eliminate the sharp corners so that the fish 1ine 26 will not be cut by frictional engagement therewith. When the pole is collapsed the fish hook is removed from the end of the line and a plug 22 attached thereto, so that the fish line may be Similar results enter the outer end of the block 17, substantially as shown in Fig. 3.
When all of the parts are in their collapsed position, the end of the handle section 1 is closed by a cap 23 having a collar 24 upon the" inside thereof, which engages the intermediate section 7 and prevents lateral move ment thereof. This Cap is held in its locked position by a detent 25 connected therewith, which enters the openin 15, thereby lockin said cap against acci ental4 movement.

Both of said caps may have a threaded or sliding engagement with said handle section'as may be desired. Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hollow handle section, having reel retaining devices thereon, and an opening throughone side thereof, of a plurality of sections telescoping into said handle section, and when so assembling one end of each of said sections passes said opening and when assembled said ends are at a point in the rear thereof; a locking joint block for each telescoping section for holding said section in alinement, said block having longitudinal rooves in two sides thereof; and a detent xed at one end in one of said grooves.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hollow handle section, having reel retaining devicesthereon, and an opening through one side thereof; of a plurality of sections telescoping into said handle section; a joint block or each telescoping section; a guiding groove in one side of each of said blocks; an opening in said handle section, which opening and said grooves provide means for guiding a line passing internally along the length of all of said sections.
3.v In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of sections .telescoping into a handle sectlon; a joint block carried at one end of each of said telescoping sections for holding said sections in alinement, each block being provided with a longitudinal groove at one side thereof; a detent on each block for holding said block in a fixed position relatively to the section carrying the block and said detent engaging another section at the end thereof when the latter is in an extended position.
4. In a deviceof the character described, the combination with a plurality of sections telescoping into a handle sectlon; a joint block carried at one end of each of said telescoping sections for holding said sections in alinement, each block being provided with a longitudinal groove at one side thereof; a detent on each block for holding the same in a fixed position relatively to the section carrying the block and said detent engaging an overlapping end of another section whereby the latter section is held and locked in an extended' position.
5. In acollapsible rod; a base section having a butt end and a restricted tip end; another section telescoping into said base section; a joint block held in a xed position in one end of the telescoping section by means of a detent carried by said block engaging a perforation in said section and said detent in an extended position of the telescoping section engaging a perforation in the tip' end of said base section which overlaps the telescoping section a'nd whereby the latter section is held locked in an extended position.

In a telescoping fishing rod; a plurality of sections, one of which constitutes a base section, into which the other section or sections telescope; a joint block or member for each telescoping section separately secured relatively thereto by means of a spring detent serving also as one' of a series of means forl locking said telescoping sections in an extended posi-tion and each block having a groove at one side thereof arranged in alinenient with other grooves whereb. internal runs are provided at intervals or a line along the entire length of the telescoping sections when extended.
