METAL-BOUND JOINT OR LOCK STRAIGHT-EDGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Aug. 20, 1918.
Application filed September 29, 1917. Serial No. 194,021.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PASCHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefi'erson'and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Metal-Bound Joint or Lock Straight-Edge, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a straight edge, and one object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the two members of the sirlaight edge together, end to end, detacha y.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for reinforcing the straight edge.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that character to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan showing one side of the straight edge, one of the constituent strips of one of the members of the straight edge being removed;
Fig. 2 is a plan showing the opposite side of the straight edge not depicted in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspectiveshowing one of the anchors;
Fig. i is a perspective showing the other anchor;
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section taken approximately on the line 66 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 7 is a plan showing a portion of one of the edge bands;
Fig. 8 is a plan showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
In that form of the invention delineated in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, the straight edge is shown as comprising a pair of members 1 and 2. The members 1 and 2 of the straight edge comprise strips 3 and e which may be united by cement 5 or in any other suitable manner. The strips 4: are provided at their meeting ends with notches 6, and. a notch 39 is formed in the strip 3 of the mem ber 1. A block 7 of approximately triangular form fits in the notch 6 of the strip a of the member 2, and includes an end flange 8 against which strips 3 and 4 of the member 2 abut. A plate 9 is attached by rivets 10 to the block 7 and lies between the strips 3 and 4; of the member 2. The plate 9 may be attached bv rivets 11 to the constituent strips 3 and a of the member 2. The plate 9 is of tapered form and has anchoring recesses 12 in its edges. A tongue 14. is secured by rivets or otherwise to the end of the plate 9 and, like plate 9, lies between the strips 3 and 4: of the member 2. The tongue 14 may be of any desired length and is provided with anchoring openings 15. A head 16 is secured to plate 9 by means of rivets 17 or otherwise, and projects through a notch 18 in the end flange 8. The head 16 has an opening 19 and there is a notch 20 in the block 7 which registers with the opening 19. The flange 8 is provided with end projections 21. At its outer end, the head 16 is depressed to form a lug 22. Dowel pins 23 project from the flange8. I
The numeral 2% denotes a block resembling the block 7 and seated in notch 6 of the strip 4;. of the member 1. The block 24 is provided with an end flange 25 against which the strips 3 and A of the member 1 abut. The end flange 25 is supplied with terminal projections 41. All opening 26 is formed in the end flange 25, the end flange having holes 27 adapted to receive the dowel pins 23. A plate 28, corresponding to the plate 9, is attached to the block 24 by means of rivets 29. The plate 28 lies between constituent strips 3 and 4 of the member 1, and may be secured thereto by means of rivets 30. A tongue 31, corresponding to the tongue 14:, is attached to the plate 28 and lies between the strips 3 and 4 of the member 1. The plate 28 is provided with an opening 32 into which projects a bearing 33 formed on the block 2A. A bearing 34: is formed on the block 24: and lies in the opening 26. Into the bearings 33 and 34 is threaded a screw 35 having a head 36 provided with holes 37 adapted to receive a nail or pin, whereby the screw may be rotated. A pin 38 is inserted through. the screw 35 between the bearings strips of the member is have barbs d3. There may be any ntnnber of these barbs. if desired, the inner faces of the strips 8 and 4 may be recessed as shown at dd to receive the cement 5, which, coacting with the tongues and the barbs holds the edge bancs in place. lhe recesses shown at may be omitted if desired.
The edge band 4:0 may be used for binding spirit levels and other mechanical tools.
Channel members are inserted into the ends of strips 3 and t, to hold the same together.
in Fig. 8, a modified form oi the invention has been shown. In this form of the invention, the blocks d6 correspond to the blocks 7 and H, and are provided with extensions l7, represented in Figs. 3 and i by the plates and 9.
The projections d1 and 21 extend througledge bands d0 and may be riveted thereon.
In practical operation, members 1 and 2 are broug it together edgewise, the log 22 fitting in the opening and the bearings and 3%, together with the screw being received in the opening 19 of tee head 16. The dowel pins are received in the holes 27. lhe screw 35 is rotated by means 01" a pin or nail, inserted into the openings 37 in the head 36. i hen the screw 35 is rotated, the inner end of the screw, bearing against the head 16 at the end of the opening 19, presses the end flang s 8 and together, the projecting portion or the head 16 being received in. the opening 26.
he elements shown in 3 and d may be denominated anchors, for convenience claiming the invention. These anchors are shown as composite structures held together by rivets, but a skilled mechanic will understand that the anchors may be of one-piece construction, the change necessary to produce such a detail lying well within the slrill of a mechzmica Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described comprising cooperating strips; means for connecting the strips together; an edge band applied to the strips; and tongues carried by the edge band and projecting between the strips, the tongues being provided with lateral barbs.
A device or the class described comprising cooperating members; a bearing fixedly carried by one member; a pressure device movable in the bearing; and a loop-shaped head carried by the other member and in closing the bearing and the pressure device, the pressure device engaging the head internally to hold said members together by thrusting action.
3. A device of the class described comprising cooperating members and anchors carried thereby, the anchors including abutting end flanges, one end flange having an open ing; a head constituting part oi one anchor and extended through the opening, the head having an aperture; a bearing constituting a part of the other anchor and received in the aperture of the head; and a screw threaded into the bearing and engaging the head within the contour oi the aperture, to hold the end flanges together.
A device or the character described comprising cooperating members and anchors carried thereby, the anchors including end flanges, the end flange of one anchor having an opening; a loop-shaped head constituting a part of the other anchor and received in the opening, the head having a lug; a bearing carried by the first specified anchor and received in the opening or" the head; and a screw threaded into the bearing a and engaging the head within the contour of the opening to hold the end flanges together, the first specified anchor having a recess wherein the lug of the head is received.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
