To all whom it may concern:
I E strA'ri'is PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN is. BAXTER, or TROY, NEW "roan, ASSIGNOB T0 covnn'r MANUFACTURING 00., or. IROY,,1\TEW YORK, A CORPORATION or NEW roan.
. SNAP-1100K- Be it known that I, JOHN B. BAXTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I '7 This invention relates to improvements in snap hooks and has for its object the provision of means for closing the eye on that end of the .shank of the hook opposite to the end which carries the detachable hook. 7
Generally, the subject matter of the present case relates to the type of eye closing means disclosed in my application, filed May 16, 1917, Serial No. 169,088.
In my former case, I utilized a swinging closure for the open side of the eye, said closure carrying a hooked or offset end adapted to be passed over the end of a retaining or locking pin. There, however, the part of the swinging closure that extended over the end of the pin constitutes an obstruction to the ready engaging of the pin by a knife blade or the like to force the same backwardly against its spring when it is desired to release the closure.
The present invention has for its object the improving of a structure, to which I have just alluded, by forming the latching portions of the swinging closure with an opening for the reception of the pin passing through the latching portion to expose the upper end of the opening, and preferably,
said opening being in one of the side faces of the latching portion. The invention also includes the provision of special securing means for the closure for fastening the same in swinging position on the shank.
The details of the construction and arrangemcnt of parts will be more readily understood from the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a hook made in keeping with the invention and with the eye closure in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the closure in open position;
Fig. 3 is an edge view;
Fig". t a longitudinal sectional view, and;
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 20, 1918.
Application filed February 20, 1918. Serial No. 218,276.
1 Fig. 5 is a detail view.
. In the drawings wherein like reference characters designate the same parts in. the views, A represents the shank of a snap hook having atone end the hook portion B and vat'the other end, the eye portion C,
these being formed by a casting of integral nature, and the hook andeye portions being shaped 'to remain in' permanent position withoutthe necessity of any bending or dis- ;torting after the casting operation. 1 The hook is closed in the customary manner through the medium of a spring-pressed bolt D slidable in the customary hollow barrel E in the shank A. From the opposite end of the barrel and thrust outwardly by the same spring, represented at F, is a pin G projecting a substantial distance into the open interior of the eye 0. Projecting laterally from the barrel or shank is a flange or lug H to which a swinging latch J is pivotally secured. This latch has a portion K adapted to bridge the space between the end of the shank of the hook and the end of the eye, conveniently interlocking with the latter as at J, and a depending portion K elongated to overlie the lug on the shank or barrel and to bear against a the adjacent side of the barrel, pivotal attachment -being secured through the medium of a rivet L carried by the swinging closure or by the lug, as desired, and offset after passing through a suitable opening in the other member as will be obvious. Should, however, occasion arise when the rivet is broken, the closure is still useful because of the alined openings M permitting an emergency rivet or other fastening device to pass through the superposed members. Projecting inwardly from the bridging portion of the closure is a latching arm N, the same lying close to the surrounding inter-surface of the eye and having a side recess or opening 0 so that the same may receive the locking pin G which will prevent the opening of the closure, and this recess or opening, passing entirely through the part in which it is formed, will always expose the end thereof to engagement by the blade of a penknife or the like, enforcing the pin inwardly against its spring to permit the closure to open.
While I have herein disclosed one particular embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent to persons skilled in the art to Which said invention relates, that the same may be embodied in other forms and devices as may be Within the scope of the hereto appended claims;
I claim v 1. The combination with shank andeye portions spaced apart, of means for bridg ing the space between the shank and eye portions including a pivoted. closure, and a. retractable pin for latching the closure in position, the closure being provided with a recess in its side for receiving the pin while leaving the end of the pin laterally exposed, substantially as described.
p 2. The combination with shank and eye portions spaced apart, of means-for bridging the space between the shank and eye portions includinga pivoted closure, and; a
retractable pin for latching the closure in position, the closure: being provided with an 1 opening for the reception of said. pin, said opening being unobstructed at that end portion spaced apart, means for closing the s'pacfiibetween the shank and eye. portions including a closure, and an integral rivet and; aperture. engagement between the closure and the shank portion, said closure and shank portion having alined: apertures for the reception of other securing means, substantially; as. described;
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature; in the presence: of two witmes s JOHN BAXTER-W Witnesses:
