Specification of Iietters Patent.
Application fi1ed Ai1 gu st5 1916.' Serial No. 113,306.
fixed to the frame by means of battens and bolts, the edges of the cloth being clamped between the battens and the frame. This construction had drawbacks, which the present invention overcomes.
The invention comprises two bent levers, pivoted at opposite ends of a cross-bar, and a cam pivoted in slots formed in the overlapping ends of the said levers. Grooves are formed near the other ends of the levers to fit upon rods adapted to be pressed into grooves formed in the filter frame. The cloths are interposed between the rods and the grooves, and thus make a tight joint and are securely held in position, when the cam is operated by its lever.
The drawing herewith illustrates the invention as employed to clamp the filter cloths to a filter frame, and will now be referred to for the purposes of a detailed description Figure 1, is a side elevation,
Fig. 2, a front elevation, and
Fig. 3, a plan of the apparatus.
The bent levers 1 and 2 are fulcrumed by pins 3 and 4 respectively to a crossbar 5. The horizontal members of the levers 1 and 2 have slots 6 through which passes a pin 7 whereon a cam 8 is pivoted. has a lever 9. 7 7 V The vertical members of the levers 1 and 2 have grooves 10 and 11 respectively, adapted to fit upon rods 12 and 13 respec tively. Grooves 14 and 15, formed in the filter frame 16, are adapted to receive the rods 12 and 13 respectively. The filter cloth 17 is interposed between the rods 10 and 11 and the grooves 14 and 15.
The cam S isadapted to bear upon the crossbar 5.
The cloth .17 and the rods. 12 and 13 hav The cam Patented 23-;
ing been placed in position, thelever 9 is pushed downward in the'direction shown by the arrow in 1, and the cam S bear ing on'the'cros'sbar 5 forces upward the horizontal members ofthe levers, land 2, and
as t-hese levers are fulcrumed to the "crossbar 5 their vertical members are forced inward and press upon the rods 12 and 13 so that a tight joint is made by the cloth against the filter frame 16.
lVhat I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A clamping device, comprising in combination, a crossbar, bent levers pivoted on said crossbar and having clamping arms lying opposite to each other and other'arms arranged at the opposite side of said crossbar and'substantially parallel thereto, with their inner ends adjacent to each other and to the bar, and means carried by the. adj aeent ends of the last mentioned arms and coacting with the crossbar to move said lying opposite to each other and otherarms of greater length arranged at the opposite side of said crossbar with theirinner ends adjacent to each otherand to the bar, and means co-acting with said ends andsaid bar to move saidends away from the bar and to bring said clamping arms together.
7 said crossbar and having clamping arms lying opposite to-each other and other arms of greater length arranged at the opposite side of sa1d crossbar with thelr mner ends adjacentto each other and to the bar, and. cam means carried by sa1d ends and co acting with said bar to move said ends away from the bar and to bring said clamping arms together with increased pressure.
1. A clamping device, comprising in combination, a cross bar, bent levers pivoted on: said cross bar having oppositely arranged clamping arms andother arms lying adjacent said crossbar, and cam means car-,
ing arms toward or away from each other. 5. A clampmg device, comprising n Com-1 bination, a cross bar, bent levers pivoted on said crossbar having oppositely arranged clamping arms and other arms extending toward each other and overlapping at their ends, a pin passing through slots in the overlapping ends of the last mentioned arms, and a cam mounted on said pin and bearing against said cross bar. 7 V
6. A clamping device, comprising in combination, a cross bar, bent levers pivoted on said cross bar having oppositely arranged grooved clamping arms and other arms lying adjacent said cross-bar, clamping rods lying in the grooves of the clamping arms, and means co-acting With the said other arms and the cross bar for moving the 15 clamping arms toward or away from each other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo witnesses? CHARLES EDMUND CLEWS,
