EDGE-BENDING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent ed July 1c, 1913.
Application file iane 25, 1917. Serial No. 176,708.
pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to metal bending machinery and especially what is known as an edge-bender; that is to say, a machine which is designed to bend sheet metal in the plane of the metal, which of course; is ordinarily very diflicult as it has its maximum strength in this direction. i
In the drawings,- 1
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine with some of the parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Fig. 4 is a section of a part of one of the rolls and the forming block as used.
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of the rolls.
I a designates the frame; I) the speed reduction gears; d the drive shaft; 0' the driven shaft provided with a beveled pinion that meshes with the oppositely facing eveled pinions g, h loosely running on the drive shaft d. The jaw clutch z serves to connect either one of these loose pinions g and h to the drive shaft, and therefore, acts as a power reversing clutch which is controlled from a handy position near the top of the machine by reason of the bent lever j and the link 70.
It will be noted that the driven shaft 0 is journaled vertically in the frame and car-' ries at its top a roller Z which has a pair of annular grooves m in its periphery adapted to receive the metal strip or work n; This work is what is known as a stiffening for an automobile fender. These strips are cut out straight from the stock and then bent edgewise to the desired contour of the fender, which may be a double reversed curve if a front fender, and an almost semi-circular curve if a rear fender. However, in bending for a reverse curve, two forces are used, one after the other, as the strips have to be laid in the forming block with the beads and wires on the outside instead of on the inside as shown in Fig. 4. The forming roll has also to be changed. Cutting these strips from straight stock is, of course, a great saving in material from the practice of cut ting them out in a curved-form.
The forming block 0 (when used for rear fenders) ma be of the curvature desired for the finis ed strip and, of course, may be varied within quite broad limits. In cross sect on it may be U shape (Fig. 4). The uprights of the U each carry one stifi'ening strip. The folded-over edge of the stiffen- 'ing strip which is intended to be rolled in with the-main web of the fender, turns over to the outside of the upright of the U. The head of the strip which carries the stiffening wire already rolled in, rests at the bottom of the U and a small protuberance 9 forms a seat on either side of the protuberance for each of these beads. Or when bending in the opposite direction the U-like pushing should be on the roll and the complementary pushing on the form. This can be accomplished by changing the roll and changing the form.
' It will be seen that when the forming block 0 is brought into engagement with the form roll Z that the formin block and the form roll each serve to compitely incase the cross sectional portion of the stifl'ening strip in contact with the two members so stifi'ening strip, no distortion of the stock can occur. In Fig. 2 it will be seen that the forward end of the stifiening stri is .clamped to the forming block by the 0 amp 1'. The forward end of the forming block may be put between the form roll Z and the guiding rolls, which is a roll having a plain periphery and a pair of collars t, t, for enaging about the forming block. When the forming block with the stiffening strip clamped in place is put between these two rolls, the rolls are drawn together by turning the lever M, which is journaled in the journals v, c, of the frame a- This lever is connected with a rock shaft y that in turn connects rigidly with the lever arm 2- At the end of this lever arm 2 a link 1 is pivoted which is connected to the bifurcated end of the sliding rod 2 that connects with the slide 3 through the coil spring 4. The slide 3 journals the plain roll 8- In the standard is journaled the doublerooved roll Z. Now obviously by throwing t e lever shown in Fig. 1 awayvfrom the viewer, the
slide 3 can be made to move. away from the standard 5 so as to separate the rolls, and
viewed in cross section as shown'in Fig. 4.
Consequently when the two rollsis and Z are brought together by throwing the toggle arms of the control apparatus, the spring will securely hold the rolls and form together and the metal is completely socketedi in the restraining walls of the form and the forming roll 30 that it is obliged to follow the contour of the form as the same is pulled through the rolls by the driving of the roll L which as already shown, is connected up with the power'by a. large speed reduction gearing. The other roll is'an idler to carry the form through the rolls without friction.
By using the i ler roll differential speed of the rolls can be secured without difi'erential gearing, which is quite an advantage and difi-erential speed is necessary because of the curvature of the form.
' What I claim. is:
1. In an edge bending machine for bending stiffening strips for automobile fenders and similar strips, the combination of a driving roll, an idler roll, means for drawin the said roll toward and away from said driving roll including a spring for allowing relative movement after the rolls are in a set position and to furnish pressure for frietional driving of the roll and devices passing between the rolls, and a formin block having a longitudinal contour curve to the bend desired for the, strip, the peripheries of the said block and one of the rolls being shaped to completely ensheathe and restrain all the sides of one or more strips, said idler roll'and forming block being driven solely by friction.
2. In an edge bendin I machine, the combination of a driven r01 an idler roll opposite the driven'roll and both provided with grooves having .uninterrupted surfaces, a longitudinally arcuate forming block having one or more grooves in one face'and propelled through the rollers solely by friction, and means for vyieldingly pressing the rollers and forming block together.
In testimonywhereof I sign this specification.
