Be it known that 1, JOHN A. KAISER, a citizen of the 'United States of America, 1'8.

and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Rubber Heels, of which the following is .a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a detachable rubber heel and has special reference to means for detachably connecting a heel to a shoe or other footwear so that the heel may be re-v 1 moved when worn or injured and a new heel substituted therefor, without necessarily obtaining the services of a shoemaker or repair man. a

The primary object of my invention is to furnish a shoe or other footwear with a fixed plate or member in engagement with which a .rubber' heel may be easily and quickly placed to' be firmly held so that the heel may e used as though permanently or fixedly attached to the shoe.

Another object of this invention is to provide a heel fastening means for a shoe wherein the resiliency of the heel contributes towardholding the heel or its fastening means in a useful position relatively to a shoe, thus preventin the heel from becoming accidentally isplao ed while forming part of a shoe.

A further object of my invention is to provide heel fastening means consisting of comparatively few parts that may be easily manipulated when installing or providing a shoe with a heel in accordance with my invention, and the above and other objects are attained by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and I illustrating a modified form of fastening shown in Fig. A.

is made of metal and in plan conforms to the outline of a heel, said heel plate having the forward edge thereof provided with a depending transverse flange 5. The heel plate is also provided with a plurality of key-hole shaped openings 6 and these openings are adapted to register with the recesses 7 in the lower face of the shoe sole 2.

The-reference numeral 8 denotes a heel,

preferably made of rubber and molded in said heel are nuts 9 or other anchoring means for screws or headed studs 10 protruding from the upper face of the .heel8 and adapt ed to extend through the openings 6 and have the heads thereof engage theupper face of the heel plate A. The plurality of screws or studs '10 can be easily and quickly placed in engagement with the heel plate 4, but the studs cannot be shifted into or seated in the narrow portions of the openings without. compressing the forward edge of the heel 8.

In other words. the forward edge of the heel 8 will not engage behind the flange 5unless the forward edge of the rubber heel is compressed and seated behind the flange. Then the resiliency of the rubber heel will tend to hold the studs 10 in the narrow portions of the openings 6, thus preventing a heelfrom becoming accidentally displaced relatively to its heel plate. This is a characteristic of my invention, as I am unaware ofany rubs ber heel that is detachable and may 'beper- 1 manently anchored relatively to a shoe sole by having aportion thereof compressed, so-

In lieu of holding the rubber heel 8"about the nut 9 or the inner end of the screw or studlt), the heel Ill, as shown in Fig. '3 may be provided with an openin 12 and the nut and screw forced into sai opening to be held by the retractile force of the rubber about the nut and screw.

In the modification shown in Figs. t and- 5, a shoe sole 13 has a recess 14 and a metallic plate 15 that may be connected to the solo by suitable fastening means, as nails 16. The sole plate 15 has a plurality of slots 17 and these slots are-adapted to receive tongues I 18 of C shaped members 19 mounted in a heel 20 that has an edge thereof engaging the flange 5 of the plate 15.

By'having the heels detachable, I may have leather or other kinds of heels to be worn with overshoes or for other purposes, and the heels of a pair of shoes may be changed from one shoe to the other, so' that side edges of the heels may be evenly worn.

It is thought that the utility of my invention will be apparent without further description, and while, in the drawing there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the'scope of. the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. The combination of a heel plate havin a depending fiangethe entire width thereof, a rubber heel adapted to' have the edge thereof sprung into engagement with the flange of said heel plate, and fastening means for attaching said heel to the plate and adapted to be held in a locked position by the sprung edge of said heel. v

2. The combination of a shoe sole, a heel plate attached thereto, and a heel suitably connected to said heel plate and adapted to have its connecting means held against displacement by an entire upper front edge of said heel.

3. The combination with a shoe sole, of a heel plate attached thereto and provided with a depending flange the entire Width thereof, a heel, and fastening means detachably holding said heel in engagement with said heel plate, said fastening means being held locked by the resiliency of the upper front/edge of said heel against the flange of said heel plate.
