Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 25, 191 8 Application filed February 7, 1818. Serial No. 215,763.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. HUMAN, of
Rochester, in the county. of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Film Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had. tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to photography and more particularly photographlc plate holders and it has for its ob ect to provide a simple, light and conven ent device for retaining sheets of cut film in an ord1- nary plate holder otherwise adapted for the reception of plates so that elther plates or films can, selectively, be exposed therein. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a plate holder provided with a film holding attachment constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention- 2 is an enlarged central section taken suh stantially 0:1 thgelilnfe 22 of Fig. 1;
i 3 is an e ar ra en'tary perspective view of a corner of tlie film holding and Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same Referring first to the plate hol er 1 which, as before stated, may be ofthe usual type, 2 indicates the top rail thereof .and 3 the bottom rail. The particular device illustrated is a double plate holder embod ing two dark chambers 4 the back of each owhich is constituted by a central partition or se tum 5 held by the rails 2 and 3 and each 0 amber is closed by the usual removable shutter slide 6. The rail 2 is grooved at 7 at the to of each chamber 4 and at the bottom of eac of these chambers is a follower block 8 similarly grooved at 9 and premed upwardly b a spring 10. These grooves are of a widt about equal to that of the late for which the holder 1s adapted and t e spring ressed followers 8 act to clamp the plate wit in the grooves beingl depressed or disengaged by premure of t e finger at the cutaway portions 11 in the lower rail 3.
In the practice of m invention, I provide a light but strong held'wit in the grooves 7 and 9 in much the same manner as the plate and which will lie vagainst the margins of a flexible cut film sheet 12 laid against the backingor partition member"5 an hold it stationary in a flat position. The side rails of this frame are me adapted to be indicated at 13 and I prefer to make them of wood rectangular in cross section. The top and bottom rails 14 are of sheet metal strifps 8| cent to them are forward shoulders 18. e
ribs are of a thickness approximating that of the lass plate for which the holder is adapted ess the thiclmess of the out films 12.
In use, the film 12 is first placed against the back 5 of the dark chamber 4 and the frame is then inserted in the holder against the film by depressing the follower 8 and first slippin the upper rib 17 into the groove The fol ower 8 is then released so that the lower rib 17 of the frame engages in the' groove 9 thereof, the shoulders 18 in each case abutting the members 2 and 8 adjacent to the grooves. The film is thus securely held in a flat condition, the engagement being uniform and continuous throughout its margins.
A retaining frame of the character described masks vofi' very little .of the face of the film as it is made light and strong and the provision of the ribs 17 also serves to strengthen the rails 14 which may be made of very light sheet metal.
I claim as my invention: v
1. A film retaining frame for photographic plate holders havin a rib and an adjacent shoulder on an on rail, said rib approximating the thickness of a plate and adapted to engage with the plate retaining groove of a plate holder.
2. A film retaining frame for photographic .plate' holders having its end rails formed of doubled sheet metal in the nature of channels or moldings having ribs zap-- grooves of a plate holder, the side rails of nameeo the frame bein secured between corner ex= tensions on sai end rails.
4:. The combination with a photographic plate holder having a back, an end rail provided with a plate retainin groove and an opposed spring pressed to lower provided with a plate retaining groove, of a detachable frame ada ted to hold a cut film sheet agamst the bac the end rails of the frame being provided with ribs and with adjacent shoulders, said ribs being adapted to fit within the plate retaining grooves of the holder in the manner of a plate.
