WIRE-CUTTER ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DANHOFFER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing a-t Youngstown, in the county of Ma honing and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Cutter Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the )rovision of a wire-cutting device formed in connection with a knife whereby wires may be readily severed, provision being made for insulating portions thereof and preventing the operator from receiving an electric shock when cutting electric conducting wires.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knife for readily cutting wire barriers and having means for preventing the operation of the device when desired, the structure being so arranged as not to interfere with the ordinary use of the knifeblade and the structure being also service able as a bayonet.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device employed as a bayonet mounted upon a gun barrel;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof taken upon line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device detached from the gun and in its operative open position;
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a transverse, sectional view taken upon line 55 of Fig. 3; and
Fig.6 is a perspective view of the locking stop employed with the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the device broadly consists of a knife 12 having a handle 11 mounted upon the shank 18 with a cross-piece or hand-guard 13 at the .inner end of the blade adjacent the handle. The attachment is readily mounted upon a rifle-barrel 14 by means of a collar .15carried by the said guard 13, and fitting over the barrel and secured thereto. A receiving socket 16 is provided in the handle 11 for the reception of a post 17 on the lower side of the barrel 14.

extending therethrough pivoted to the handle and tan by means of a rivet 21.
A notch 22 1s provided in the blade 12 forwardly of the guard 13 having suitably formed sides for cooperatin with the sides of a similar notch 23 in the lever 20 so as to sever a wire positioned within thenotch 22 upon closing the lever 20 thereon. A spring 24 is mounted within the assage 19 of the handle, and engages the ever 20 to normally maintain the wire-cutter 0 en as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. e end 25 of the lever 20 at the opposite end of the lever from its notch 23 is positioned at the opposite side of the handle 11 from the cutting notches 22 and 23, it being understood that by grasping the knife-handle 11 and e forcing the lever end 25 toward the handle, the notched portions of the blade and lever will be brought into cutting relations with respect to a wire or other member positioned within the said notches 22 and 23.
A block 26 is slidably mounted in the projecting end 27 of the guard 13 at the opposite side of the device from the collar 15 adapted for moving inwardly to engage the lever 20 and maintain the same in its ino erative or closed position, as shown in F1 1 of the drawings. A set-screw 28 is carri by the guard end 27 for engaging the block sulating material as herein illustrated while the material from which the handle 11 is constructed is also dielectric, as indicated by the sectional view thereof in Fig. 2. The rivet '21 and a similar securing rivet 21' for the handle 11 and tang 18 are suitably insulated from the said tang as well as the lever 20 as herein shown. Suitable securing means such as screws 29 may be employed for holding the collar 15 upon the barrel 14, it being only important that the device be pabl f r dy de a hm nt r m h l ifle for use as a knife or sword ready for easily wire-cutting attachment adds onl slightly to the weight of the knife 12 and does not impair the usefulness of the knife as a baydnot when mounted upon the rifle barrel 14, nor its usefulness for other purposes when detached therefrom.
What I claim as new is l. A knife comprising a handle and a blade, a passage in the handle and a cutting nfltt'll in the blade, :1 cutting lever pivoted in the said passage with a cutting notch in one of its rojecting ends adapted to coop crate with the blade notch in the wire-cutting operation, the other end of'the lever projecting from the opposite end of the passage adapted for grasping in operating the cutter, a spring within sald passage engaging the lmer adapted for normally maintaining the notched portions of the lever and blade in their open separated arrangement, a transwrsely arranged guard arranged at the inner end of the blade, and a block. slidahly positioned in the guard adapted for holding the lever normally in closed position.
3. A knife form of bayonet comprising a blade havin a tan at one end and a handle carried by t e sait tang arranged with an opening therethrough, a transversel positioned attaching guard arranged at t its base of the blade adJaeent the handle, a lever extending through the said opening and guard with its ends projecting at opposite sides of the device, pivotalconnections between the said lever, handhand tang, one edge 0 the blade and the adjacent end of the lever having cooperating wirecutting notches, means within the passage adapted for maintaining the cutting members in their separated open arrangement, a stop-block slidably arranged in one end of the guardihaving a path of movement in the plane of said lever, and means carried by the guard adapted for maintaining said block in its adjusted position, the unnotched end of the lever being arranged at the opposite side of the device from the said block and cutting end of the lever adapted for grasping during the operation of-the device.
