' Wallace, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to nail pullers and theiprimary object of the invention is to provide a nail puller in combination with the ordinary expedient of a wedge member employed generally for fastening a hammer head or other tool to the end of a handle.

As a further object of the invention the device comprises a gripping element adapted to embrace the cutting blade of an ax whereby a powerful pulling action may be imparted to an embedded nail at the same time obviating the danger of displacing the wedge from the end of the ax handle.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a nail puller which consists of comparatively few parts and is sim 1e in construction, but durable and well a apted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:

Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of fieferring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the hammer head 1 is provided with the usual socket 2 in which the end of the handle 3 is inserted. The attachment comprises a wedge member 4 having the sharpened edge 5 whereby the same may be driven into the end of the handle 3. Integrally formed with the enlarged end of the wedge 4 is the head 6 having the claws 7 and 8. These claws 7 and 8 are arranged in pairs at each side of the head 6 similar to the construction of a claw-hammer and are spaced apart to provide the spaces 9 in'which the nail shank may be disposed when-the nail is to be withdrawn. The. wedge 4 has an opening lO for receiving a fastening rivet 11 adapted to extend through openings in' the socket 2 and the end of the handle 3 for fastening the wedge.

As shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing the claws 8' are curved inwardly a greater distance than the claws 7 whereby the space between the claws 8' receives the edge 12 of the cutting blade of the ax. In this instance the claws 7 are employed to pull the nail while the opposite claws 8 press the attachment against displacement when a stronger pull is exerted on the nail.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable nail puller has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

I claim:

1. A nail puller comprising, in combination, a tool provided with a socket, a handle received in the socket, a wedge member driven into the handle to expand the same for facilitating the fastening of the handle in the socket, a head formed on the end of the wedge, the said head being of a width to overlap the end of the handle and engage the said tool, and bifurcated nail pulling elements extending in opposite directions from the head.

2. A nail puller comprising, in combination, a tool provided with a socket, a handle received in the socket, a wedge member driven into the handle to expand the same for facilitating the fastenin of the handle in the socket, a head forme on the end of the wedge, the said head being of a width to overlap the end of the handle and engage the said tool, nail pulling elements extending in opposite directions from the head, the said nail pulling elements comprising curved sections having their terminals disposed in close proximity to the tool and bifurcated to receive a nail 0r embrace the said tool.

3. A nail puller comprising, in combination, a tool provided with a socket, a handle received in the socket, a wedge member driven into the handle to expand the same for facilitating the fastening of the handle in the sOCket, a head formed on the end of the wedge, the said head being of a Width to overlap the end of the handle and engage the said tool, nail pulling elements extending in opposite directions from the head, the said nail pulling elements comprising curved sections having their terminals disposed in close proximity to the tool and bifurcated to receive a. nail, one portion of the said tool being received in the bifurcation of one of the said nail pulling elements.

4. A nail puller comprising, in combination, a tool having a socket for receiving the end of a handle, a head, oppositely extending claws formed on the head and curved toward the said tool, means for attaching Copies at this patent may be, obtained for the head to the end of the handle, one of the said pairs of said curved claws being spaced apart for receiving the edge of the tool for cooperating with said means for preventing the displacement of the said head.

5. An attachment for a tool comprising a wedge, a head integrally formed with the enlarged edge of the wedge, and claws curved toward the wedge and extending from opposite sides of the head, the said claws having their ends embracing a portion of the said tool.
