SPANNERKEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 191%..
Application filed May 9, 1916. Serial No. 96,425.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC KREWSON, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Cheltenham, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spanner- Keys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a spanner key primarily intended for uncoupling fire hose although it is susceptible of use in other capacities.
The invention aims to provide a tool of this character comprising a pair of hingedly connected sections capable of folding to produce a comparatively small compact article which can be conveniently carried in the pocket or on a key ring, the invention further embodying the desired features of simplicity in construction, durability, and in cheapness of manufacture.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the fol lowing description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specification likenumerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the device showing the sections extended.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View.
Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the sec tions folded.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the manner of using the tool.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view to show the point of engagement of the stop lug with the section 10.
The device forming the subject matter of my invention essentially consists of the sections 10 and 11 respectively, the section 10 constituting the spanner key proper and is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 12 for the reception of the section 11 when the parts are folded as shown in Fig. 3, the section 11 constituting a handle. It is of course obvious that these sections are hingedly connected in any suitable manner as at 13 to permit the parts to be folded or extended for use in the manner illustrated. The section 10 has an actuating portion 14 which may be of any suitable design. The
@opies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the section 11 is provided with a lateral oflset portion 15 adjacent the point of connection between the respective sections, for the purpose of facilitating the opening of said sections when desired, a key ring 16 being associated with the offset portion. The extremity of the offset portion 15 terminates in a stop lug 17 which when the sections are separated is adapted to engage the lower edge of the'section 10 thereby limiting the adjustment of the handle 11 and holding the sections in alinement,-whereby the tool can be conveniently handled for the purpose intended. The tool is very simple in its construction thereby reducing the cost of manufacture of articles of this character to a minimum. Manifestly the respective sections of the device can be interfitted in a folded position thereby producing a comparatively small compact article of this character which can be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user, or associated with a key ring. When use of the tool is desired, the section 11 is withdrawn from the section 10 and extended to the position shown in Fig. 1. In this position the section 11 serves in the capacity of a handle, while the actuating portion or terminal 14 is positioned beneath one of the pivoted dogs 18 of the coupling. The heel 14: of the actuating portion provides a fulcrum for the tool, to permit of the proper movement of the tool to eflect a separation of the dog 18 from one of the sections of the hose, whereby the latter can be readily uncoupled.
What is claimed is A device of the class described com rising a pair of hingedly connected sections, one of said sections having a slot for the reception of the other section when folded, the latter mentioned section when in extended position constituting a handle for the device, an offset terminal formed on the said section and projecting beyond one longitudinal edge thereof, and a stop lug formed on said ofiset terminal and projecting at a right angle therefrom for engagement with the other section at one side of the slot therein to hold said sections in alined extended position for use.
