Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented ay 28, 1918.
Application filed December 5, 1917. Serial No. 205,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARSIENE LEGAULT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Beauharnois, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to filters and more particularly to that class of filters for filtering water in which the water is permitted to travel through a body of granular filtering material.
An object of the present invention is to provide a filter of this character wherein as long as the water to be filtered is supplied thereto the filtered water will be forced from the tank automatically.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a filter of this character which is simple and compact in construction, eiii cient in operation and capable of being readily and thoroughly cleaned when necessar Vllith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efliciency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the filtering system forming one embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the filter;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section of the water motor; and,
Fig. 4; is an end elevation showing a portion thereof in section.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views The pipe 1 is connected to any suitable source of supply wherein water under pressure may be supplied thereto and arranged within this pipe 1 is a valve 2. This pipe 1 is provided with a branch pipe 3 having a coupling 4 therein and this coupling has formed therewith a casing 5 in which is arranged a turbine water motor 6. Communieating with the pipe 3 is a depending pipe 7 which leads within the filtering tank 8 and leading from the tank 8 is an outlet pipe 9 which leads to the reservoir 10 wherein the filtered water may be stored. Also connected to the pipe 3 is an auxiliary pipe 11 which leads to the reservoir 10 and this pipe 11 has a valve 12 arranged therein. By the arran ement of the piping as hereinbefore descri ed the water under pressure supplied to the pipe 1 may be led first to the filter 8 and then into the reservoir 10 or when it is desired the valve 12 may be opened and the water'fed directly from the supply pipe to the reservoir 10.
The filtering tank 8 comprises a circular body portion having its opposite ends closed and arranged within the tank is a suitable granular filtering material. This material consists preferably of sand 13, gravel 1a of smaller sizes and gravel of larger sizes 15 is arranged between the sand and the gravel indicated by the numeral 14. Supported at the outlet end of the pipe 7 and arranged within the filtering tank 8 is a deflector 16 which has a configuration of that of a cone and is provided with a plurality of perforations so that the incoming water from the pipe 7 will spread out over this cone and subsequently be caused to travel through the granular filtering material whereby the water will be completely filtered before entering the reservoir 10. Arranged within the tank 8 is a tube 17 having a reduced lower end 18 which communicates with the outlet pipe 9 and this reduced portion 18 of the tube is provided with the openings 19 whereby the filtered water from the tank 8 may pass into the pipe 9.
To force the filtered water from the tank 8 through the pipe 9, I provide a pump and this pump comprises a piston 20 which operates within the reduced portion 18 of the tube, Connected to this piston 20 is a link additional power will 21 and this link 21 is connected to a lever 22 pivot-ally supported upon the bracket 23. The shaft 24 of the turbine 6 has secured thereto a disk 25 and adapted to be eccentrically connected to this disk 25 is a link 26 and this link 26 is connected to one end of the lever As the water under pressure is supplied to the pipe 1 the turbine 6 will be caused to revolve and by the rotation of thi urb n th P l 9 2 i b used to reciprocatelthrough the mechanism forinerly described. During the reciprocation of this piston 20 the filtered Water from the tank 8 Willbe drawn in through the openings 19 into the reduced portion 18 of the tube then subsequently forced through the pipe 9 into the reservoir 10, From this it is obvious that as long as water is being supplied to the tank 8 the piston 20 willbe caused to reciprocate for forcing the filtered water from the tank. Therefore, no other A v V be necessary to operate the piston 20 other than the water which is to be filtered.
The top and bottom of the tank 8 are detachably connected so that they may be easily and readily removed when it is desired to clean the dirt and other foreign matter that accumulates within the granular filtering material.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A filter of the character described comprising a tank having an inlet leading thereto and an outlet leading therefrom, a pump arranged within said tank and means where- Oepies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. C. 7
by the water supplied to said inlet will cause said pump to be operated.
A, filter, of the character described comprising a tank having filtering material therein, an inlet pipe leading to said tank, an outlet pipe leading from said tank, a pump arranged Within said outlet pipe, a motor arranged Within said inlet pipe and said motor being operatively connected to said pump. 7
3. A- filter of the character described comprising a tank having filtering material ar-' ranged therein, an inlet pipe leading to said tank, a deflector arranged within said tank and extending over the inlet end of said pipe, an outlet pipe leading from said tank, and a p p arranged within said outlet pipe substantially as and for the purpose specified.
A filter of the character described compri ng & ank ha ing fi g m eria a ranged therein, an inlet pipe leading to saidtank, a turbine arranged within said inlet pipe, an outlet pipe leading from said tank, said outlet pipe extending through said tank, a pump arranged within that portion of the outlet pipe which extends through the tank, said pump comprising a piston, a link C011. nected to said piston, a lever pivotally mounted upon said tank, one end of said lever' being connected to said link and the opposite end of said lever being connected to said turbine substantially as and for the purpose specified. i
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ARSENE LEGAULT.
