Description

M. A. FERGUSON.
' COLLAR PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. H, 1913.
Patented May 28,1918.
INVE/VTUB g:
WITNESSES.
I WNFEE TATE PATENT @FFltQFZ.
MARIE A. FERGUSON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
COLLAR-PROTECTOR.
Application filed September 11, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIE A. FERGUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a new and improved collar protector, having for its object, among other things, to provide a readily cleanable device, that may be produced and sold at the minimum cost, be easily and quickly applied and will prevent the soiling of both the permanent garment collar as well as the linen collar usually attached thereto.
To these, and other ends, my invention comprises the collar protector herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like figures of reference designate like parts in the several figures;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof upon line AB of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof upon line CD of Fig. l; and
Fig. 4: is a fragmentary View of a portion of the back of the protector.
My improved collar protector is preferably constructed of a band 1 of celluloid, or similar material, that is easily cleaned by Wiping with a damp cloth or by any one of many other simple means, well known in the art, the top and bottom edges 2 and 3 thereof being turned over slightly so that they do not present a sharp edge that is liable to cut the flesh, and also keeps the intermediate portion of the band away from the separable collar. A buttonhole 4 is provided through both ends of the band near the front edges thereof and is cut away at 5 so that the protector may be the more readily concealed when in use.
A similar buttonhole may be provided at the back of the collar, if desired, and as may be necessary for some types of garments, but as the prevailing fashion demands a concealed buttonhole in the collar of the garment, I have illustrated mechanism for at- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Serial No. 789,335.
tachment of my device to such garments, said mechanism comprising a clip 6 having a front plate 7 that is secured to the band by a pintle 8 and a back plate 9 that is substantially parallel with the front plate but is upon the opposite side of the band with an open space therebetween. Preferably the turned over portion of the lower edge 3 is interrupted so as to provide a fiat bearing surface for the front plate 7. This back plate projects under the tab covering the buttonhole and prevents the protector from slippin upwardly. The protector is attached inside of the collar band of the garment, the clip holding it down at the back and the collar button at the front which passes through the buttonholes 4 of the protector and the buttonholes of the collar band of the garment as is usual. After the protector is in place the collar is attached in the usual manner upon the outside of the collar band, concealing the protector which is in contact wi h the flesh and prevents dirt and perspiration from reaching the inside of the collar.
1 am aware that collar band protectors have heretofore been made, and therefore do not claim my invention broadly, limiting it to substantially the construction herein shown.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A collar and garment band protector com prising a band having a lower turned over straight edge and having an upper edge turned over intermediate its ends with both turned over edges on the same side of the body of the band, the ends of the upper edge being cut away to form bevels, said turned over portions coacting to keep the intermediate portion of the band away from the collar, the ends of said band having front button holes therethrough and means for attaching the center of the band to the garment band, said means comprising a U-shaped metal clip straddling the lower edge of the band and having a relatively short leg affixed directly to one side of the body of the band, a fastener passed through the short leg and through the band for holding the clip in place the turned over portion of the edge being interrupted to form a flat bearing for In testimony whereof I aflix my signature said leg, said; clip. having a relatively long in presenceof two witnesses. 1 leg projecting upwardly. upontheopposite MARIE A.-FERGUSON. side thereof with an open space therebe- Witnesses:
