JGINE EGE MEETING MEMBER$.
Specification of matters Eatent.
Patented May 28, 1%318.
Application filed May 22, 1914. Serial No. 840,191.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ROBERT D. BAKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Joints for Meeting Members, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to oints for meeting members, and resides in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will more fully hereinafter appear and as particularly set forth in the claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the members to be connected, separated;
Fig. 2 illustrates the members attached to each other with my improved joint;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the members; and -FFig. 4 is a section on the line m-w' of Fig. 5 is a section on the line y-y of Fig. 2, the eccentric being illustrated in its clamping position.
As my invention is peculiarly adapted for connecting together channel metallic mem hers, I have illustrated the joint as applied to such a structure, and will describe the invention as embodied in channel-shaped side forms for concrete road constructions, though I do not desire to limit my protection to this particular use.
Referrin to the one embodiment of the invention s own in the drawings, A and B designate respectively the two members to be connected together. One of the members as B has a portion C which is adapted to en'- gage the face D of the member A and is held in engagement with such face by means of an eccentric clamping member E. In the preferred form the portion C is formed of a plate secured to the member B by a plurality of rivets F and having the portion which projects beyond the end of the member B provided with spaced apertures G and H adapted to receive pins I J projecting outwardly from the face D of the member A. The eccentric E is herein shown as comprising a roller having studs K pivoted in 'aper tures L in the flanges M of the channel member A.
To secure the members A and B together the eccentric roller E is turned to the positionshown in full lines in Fig. 4 and the projection C then inserted longitudinally between the roller E and the pins I and J, the distance between the ends of the pins and the eccentric roller when the parts are as shown in full lines in Fig. 4, being suflicient to allow this operation. When the apertures G and H aline with the pins I and J, the roller E is turned to clamp the plate C against the inner face D of the member A, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. When the parts are arran ed as shown in Fi 2 the pins I and J wil prevent relative, ongitudinal and lateral movement between the portion C and the member A, and, therefore, hold the members A and B against relative, longitudinal and lateral movement, while the eccentric roller E will avoid sidewise movement of the portion C and thereby hold the apertured portions G and H in engagement with the pins I and J. While rotation may be imparted to the eccentric in various ways it is preferred to turn the eccentric by means of a bar, one end of which is inserted in a socket E formed in the eccentric. From the foregoing description it will be readily apparent that a very simple and efficient connection is provided for securing the members together. While I have shown and described the preferred form of the invention, I do not desire to limit the protection to the particular structure illustrated, but consider the invention of suflicient scope to embody various modifications.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with alined channel members, of an eccentric journaled in the flanges of one of said channel members and spaced from the face thereof, a plate secured to the face of the other of said members having a portion projecting therebeyond and adapted to be inserted between said eccentric and the face of the first-mentioned member, there being interlocking projections upon the last-mentioned face and the pro- 2 memes jection of the plate, for the purpose demember, for clamping said plate Against the is scribed. same.
2. The combination with two elongated In testimony whereof I afiix my signature meeting members having alined longitudinal in presence of two witnesses.
flanges, of a plate connecting said members, disposed between the flanges, said plate having a rigid connection with one of the mem- Witnesses: hers, and an eccentric having its ends respec- WM. J. BELKNAP, tively journeled in the flanges of the other JAMEs P. BARRY.
