ARNOLD SGHROETTEB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NECKTIE-FASTENER.
Application filed June 7, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ARNOLD SoHRon'r'rnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a necktie fastener of novel construction more particularly adapted to supplant the clasps heretofore generally used for securing the lower end of a tie to a shirt front. These clasps would in use, engage the outer or overlapping edge of the shirt front, and also one of theedges of the tie, so that the edge of the tie would be brought into alinement with the edge of the shirt, thereby deflecting the tie from a vertical position. By my invention this objection is obviated, the tie being by my fastener adapted to be so held to the shirt that it will depend downwardly from the collar button in a true vertica direction.
In the accompanying drawing:
- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section on line 11 Fig. 2; of a necktie fastener embodying my invention showingthe pin in side view;
Fig. 2, a similar section on line 2-2 Fig. 1, and s Fig. 3, a section on line 33 Fig. 1.
The device comprises a female member composed of a dished foot 1, from which projects upwardly a flat narrow elongated casing 2, adapted to be passed through the button holes of a shirt front. This casing tapers toward the top, which has rounded edges and is centrally perforated as at 3.
Within the casing is housed a flattened wire spring 4, which is so bent as to extend along the two sides thereof, and also along the top, the two beveled ends of the spring being here spaced and projecting a distance across opening 3.
Casing 2 is connected to shoe 1 preferably without the use of solder. For this purpose, the casing is provided with a lower flange which is interposed between the body of the shoe, and an upper annular plate 2 that encompasses the casing and is engaged by the flanged rim of the shoe.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 173,277.
With the female member constructed as described, cotiperates a male member consisting of a pin 5 having a head 6, and adapted to be passed through perforation 3 into casing 2.
Pin 5 is near its root provided with a pair of diametrically opposed grooves 7, which are approximately crescent shaped, being widest at their center and narrowing toward their ends. These ends merge into the shank of the pin which is thus grooveless at diametrically opposite points 8, a diameter drawn through the center of grooves 7 extending at right angles to a diameter drawn through points 8.
In use, casing 2 is passed outwardly through either one or a pair of superposed button holes formed in the shirt front, so as to protrude beyond said front. After the tie has been knotted, pin 5 is pushed through the center thereof, and through opening 3 into casing 2, so as to be brought into engagement with spring 4:. "The ends of the spring will fall into the grooves 7 so as to lock the tie to the shirt, a slight turn of the pin being sometimes required for that purpose, the necessity for which can be readily ascertained by giving the pin a slight pull. When the tie is to be removed, the pin is so turned that its points 8 are brought opposite the spring, whereupon the pin can be readily withdrawn from the casing.
It will be seen that my improved fastener is adapted to center the tie accurately along the shirt front, that it may be readily applied and removed, and that it fastens the lower end of the tie in such a positive manner, that the tie cannot buckle or slip during wear.
I claim:
In a necktie fastener, a female member comprising a flat elongated casing that tapers toward the top, said top being centrally perforated, and a spring housed within said casing, combined with a headed pin adapted to be projected through said perforated top and having a groove adapted to be engaged by said spring.
