E. ZIEGLER.
BACK REST.
APPLICATION HLED MAR. I, 1916.
// a g g E k i E I o E v Emma I Ellen/Ziegler witnesses V n no: STATES FIQ. I
ELLEN ZIEGLER, or GREGORY, scorn DAKOTA.
BACK-REST.
Application filed March 1, 1816. Serial No. 81,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Mrs. ELLEN Zincnnk, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gregory, in the county of Gregory and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Back-Rests, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention aims to provide a back rest, especially designed for use in connection with a bed, whereby the patient or user, may be supported in an upright position without any strain on the body, thereby permitting a relaxation of the muscles and the patient to rest in comfort.
In carrying out the invention I provide a device of the above mentioned character, that can be easily and quickly attached to or removed from the bed when desired, and which when in use will adjust itself to the back and comfort of the patient.
Another object of importance resides in the provision of a flexible device of this character, whereby the same can be folded into compact form when not in use.
Other objects and advantages, as well as the nature of the invention will be better understood when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts defined in the appended claim.
In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and Where 1n:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the same in use.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device.
The device is primarily intended for use in connection with a bed, herein indicated generally at A. The device consists of a plurality of spaced parallel slats 10 which may be constructed from any suitable material preferably wood, the slats being connected together and held spaced equidistantly by means of the transverse flexible members 11 which are herein shown in the nature of straps. Instead of the straps 11 a webbing of any other suitable material may be employed. However, the straps are adapted to extend beyond the outermost slats and are preferably provided with buckles or the like which are adapted to be adjust-ably associated with the extremities of the supporting members 12. The members 12 consist of two straps which are adapted to be looped about one of the end rails of the bedstead in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 1, these 'with the straps 12, the slats are arranged in arcuate relation, or in other words adjust themselves to the back of the patient so that the patient or user can restcomfortably without any undue strain upon the muscles of the body. It will be noted that each of the slats 10 is curved outwardly from a point adjacent the upper ends thereof at a proper inclination to permit a pillow or the like to be inserted between the upper ends of the slats and the back of the user for the purpose of supporting the head.
The device in its entirety can be quickly and easily attached to, or removed from the bed when desired, by reason of the connection between the supporting straps 12 and the adj acent ends of the straps 11. However when the device is in use the upper runs of the straps l2 and straps 11 are inclined toward the foot of the bed, and serve in the capacity of arm supports for the patient. lVhen use of the device is not desired, and subsequent to its removal from the bed, the back rest proper may be flattened as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, or it may be rolled or folded in various ways to occupy a minimum amount of space in the room.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be thoroughly understood without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted. However I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement herein delineated and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed, and that the various parts of the device can be constructed from any suitable material without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is A back rest for bed use comprising a pair of spaced parallel flexible members provided on their ends with buckles, a plurality of spaced slats secured at their ends upon one of said members and secured intermediate slidahly engaged about a pOluiOIl of a bed and having their ends engaged by said buckles, pressure of a reclining body against the curved ends of said slats causing said 19 straps to slide whereby said slats may incline to the same angle as the body.
L tes imony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
hiss. ELLEN ZIEGLER.
