ELEVATING MEANS FOR HIDES.
Application led November 5, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. CHARLES EDWARD Dannnn, Sr., otl Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevating Means for Hides, ot' which the. following is a speciication.
My invention is designed to permit of the ready handling of hides in connection with the tanning vats, it being my object to render it unnecessary to litt the hides independently but to handle them in stacks with the ease and facility that a single hide is handled under the present practice.
In carrying out my invention l use one or two standards at each end of the vat which are so constructed as to be removably held in place, each standard carrying a hook which supports a cord or rope passing around the stack of hides and the hook is vertically movable through means adapted to be actuated step by step to elefate the hides `gradually out of the vats.
l have shown my invention in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 'l shows the standard and operating means as it faces the vat.
.F ig. 2 is a side elevation of l, and
Fig. $5 a plan view of Fig. 1.
lach standard is composed of four angle plates o spaced apart as shown in F ig. l by a bottoni channeled plate ZJ and a spacing block o centrally of the angle plates while the upper ends are kept apart by a wood insert piece fl, suitable bolts also securing the parts together. As shown in Fig. 2 the angle plates are supported in the opposite direction likewise by the channeled plate b and the wood insert d. The angle plates are provided with racks or teeth e, these being arranged on parallel edges as shown in Fig. 1 and on opposite sides of the standard as shown in Fig. '2. The hooks are shown at f for receiving the ropes which pass under and around the hides and these hooks have a suitable connection g to a yoke h and between the yoke there is fitted a roller z, a bolt passing through these parts and securing them to hangers 7c. These hangers as shown in Fig. l pass around the racks and inwardly into the space between them where they nd a support upon a bolt Z the outer ends of Specification of Letters Patent.

which are supported in a biuroated lever m. This lever carries pawls n engaging the racks e and each pawl is provided with a handle 0 for lifting the same. The hook with its supporting parts is thus lifted by manipulating the handle p of the bifurcated lever which causes the pawls to rise by engaging the racks, it being understood that there is a standard at each end of the vat with its corresponding lever and operating means. `When it is desired to lower the hook and its supporting parts the one pawl is lifted by its handle out of engagement with the racks and lowered to the tooth beneath it and then the opposite pawl is operated in the same way, or the two pawls may be lifted out of engagement at once and the handle lowered to its bottom position. It will be observed that the standard is provided with two V-shaped projections g on its end and these may be forced into the wood of the vat and found sutiicient to hold the standard in place. The wood insert projects above the angle plates at the top ot the standard and this may be inserted in a socket or supported in any suitable manner to hold the standard iirmly in place.
ln this simple manner great lifting power is secured with a minimum expenditure of torce on the part of the operator and a stack of hides can be readily elevated out of the vat.
What I claim is -l. In combination a standard comprising four angle plates secured together and disposed around a central point in spaced relation and with their flanges directed outwardly, a lifting handle located in the spaces extending between the angle plates in one direction, teeth formed on four edges of the angle plates, the other four edges being plain, the toothed edges being parallel to and adjacent to the handle pawls carried by the handle engaging said teeth, a roller bearing on the plain edges of the angle plates and a hanger supporting the roller7 substantially as described.
2. In combination a standard comprising tour angle plates secured together and disposed around a central point in spaced relation and with their flanges directed out* wai-elly, a lifting handle located inthe spaces ported from the handle at a point between extending between the angle plates in one the plates and eairying on its lowef end an direction, teeth formed on four edges of the axle which suppors a roller and a hook, subl0 angle plates, the other foul' edges being Stantially as described.
