WIRE-CUTTER ron BAYONETS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND WrLczEK, a citizen of Russia, (having declared his iritention to become a citizen of the United States of America,) residing at Muskegon, in'the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Cutters for Bayonets, of which the following is a speciprovision of a serviceable wire cutter that may be readily attached to bayonets now in use as well as provided upon bayonets during their manufacture, the arrangement being such that wires may be readily severed by a soldier handling the gun to which the bayonet is affixed in the usual manner.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cutter that possesses great strength and utility and is readily operable when attached to any member for thrusting the same forwardly into the work, the device being serviceable for cutting any objects desired.

It being understood that my wire cutter may be readily attached to any form of operating device or handle, the same is herein illustrated in connection with the ordinary Patented May 7, 1918.

A cutter here illustrated in the form of a substantially hexagonal wheel 17 is journaled adjacent the forward free end of each of the arms 18 of the block l4by means of trunnions or shafts 19. The cutters 1( have sharpened irregular edges 20, the two cutters of each block 11 being arranged overlapping and with their cutting edges 20 inclined toward each other for readily severing a wire such as 21 as best illustrated byFig. 3 of the drawing.
When the bayonet 10 is mounted upon the barrel of a rifle, the rifle may be grasped by the soldier for thrusting the cutters 17 against the wire 21 and cutting the wire therebetween. The cutters 17 being journaled upon the trunnions 19 permits the cutters to revolve during the cutting operation while it will be seen that the device may be thrust outwardly and inwardly and the cutter 17 brought into operative contact with any object which it is desired to cut. The position of the device within the angle of the shank 13 places the same out of the way from any interference with the usual use of the bayonet blade 11.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing a similarly shaped block 22 is shown mounted upon the bayonet shank 13 in the same manner as that heretofore set forth while the block 22 has a V-shaped forwardly opening notch 23 therein for receiving a wire to be cut by a sharpened wheel 24 journaled upon an arm 25 of the block.
A cutter block 26 is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing which is similarly mounted upon a bayonet shank 13 and has a V-shapcd slot 27 in its forward end having sharpened cutting edges for severing a wire when received within the slot.
A serviceable cutter for wires and the like is arranged which may be readily mounted upon any bayonet without adding materially to the weight thereof and permitting wire to be readily severed by the soldier in charge of the device although permitting the free use of the bayonet blade.
\Vhat I claim as new is 1. A cutter for bayonets comprising a substantially U-shaped block, and overlapping cutter wheels journaled upon the sides of and adjacent the free ends of the opposite arms'of the block, said cutter Wheels being provided with oppositely inclined irregular cutting edges.
2. In combination with a bayonet having a right angular shank, a substantially U- shaped block arranged within the angle of the shank with the arms thereof projecting forwardly, a cutter wheel journaled upon a side of and adjacent the free end of each of said arms and provided with beveled cutting edges, said Wheels overlapping each other and arranged for the cutting reception of a wire therebetween during its movement in entering the block between the arms thereof.
3. In combination with a bayonet having a blade provided with a right angular shank, a substantially U-shaped block positioned within the angle of the shank with the arms thereof projecting forwardly and arranged in planes parallel with the blade, connecting Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each. by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 7
screws between the said shank and block substantially hexagonal wheels journaled adjacent the free ends of the arms in overlapping arrangement and provided with cutting edges oppositely beveled toward each other and adapted for the cutting reception of a wire therebetween.
i. In combination with a bayonet having a blade provided with a right angular shank, a substantially U-shaped block positioned within the angle of the shank with the arms thereof projecting forwardly and arranged in planes substantially parallel with the blade, screw connecting means between said shank and said block, and cutting means associated with the inner edges of the arms of the block.
