* Patented Apnea; my,
Application filed December 15, 1917." Serial Wo..207 ,254. I
To all whom it may concern: I
Be isknown that 1, JOHN HENnY JUKG Mann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wolsey, in the county of Beadle and State-of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Latch, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact descrip- I andlahlatch plate presenting a recess or 1n- Y the latch bar is guided and into which it is automatically-pressed in -the closing of thegate.
iii
,ance with the illustrated example,
tion.
My invention although capable of other uses i more particularly intended for embodiment in a gate latch of the type inwlnch a latch bar is adapted .to be guided into latched engagement with a' strike plate by means of guide surfaces on the latter.
bar movable for unlatching, .by a push rod,
verted notch at'the underside, to which Reference-is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference charac' fters indicate corresponding parts'lnall the views, it beingunderstood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention. 7 I
" Figure 1 is 'a perspective view showing the latch and strike plate applied respectively to a gate and gate post;
Fig. 2 is a side elevationpartly in verti- .;cal section on the line Fig. 3, the gate being in the latched position- Fig. 3 is a face view of'the strike plate and a portion of the gate post;
Fig. 4g is a horizontal section on the lme 4-4 Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention inv accordthe gate elements of the latch include a frame or yoke 10 secured to the gate A by screws 1 O or the like, to which frame a vertically rocking latch bar 11 ispivoted at one end as An object of my invention is to provlde an eficient latch of the type indicatedand includmg a pivoted spring-pressed latch,
' keeper and beyond the same raised, which isthe latching position. The latch bar-ll isadapted to be de- 15 through the medium of .a vertical-push I pressed against the pressure of the spring a red 16 having-asuitable handle :17 at the top,s aid rod being pivotall'y-connected at its lower end as at 16 to the latch bar.
The strike plate 18 'to coact with the latch bar'll is secured to the gate'postB which preferably has a cross piece I) to receive'the' strike'plate. At the center the latch plate arches or otherwise is given a formation to produce atthe under side a flaring inverted mean 19. To guide the latch to the recess 19 the strikesplate 18 is provided with arms 20 at each sideof the notch and extending outwardlyand upwardly, whereby to present at the under side'guldes surfaces 21. Y
The strikeplate is secured to the gate post in any suitable manner as by screws 22, said screws passing through bosses 23 on the back of the plate, which bosses serve to space the strike plate from the face of the post. The numeral 24 indicates'a strap to guideand retain the push rod 16,the strap being suitably secured as by screws 25 to', the gate A;
With the described arrangement when the gate is closed the latch bar 11 will engage either one of the guidesurfaces2l according to the direction to which the gate is swung and will thereby be guided toward the inverted recess 19 and as the guide surfaces 21 merge into the flaring walls of the said recess, the spring 15 will force the latch bar upwardly into the recess when the gate reaches the closed position.
I would state inconclusion that while the illustrated efample constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention,.l[ do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied w thout departure from the spirit of the invention as de fined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, ters Patent:
1. In a gate latch, a frame adapted to be secured to a gate, a latch bar pivoted. at its frame at the front endthrough which the latch bar extends, said keeper constituting a spring pocket, a coil springhoused in said 1nner end to the said frame, a keeperon the.

and desire to secure by Let pocket and eiterting its pressure against the V atch bar at' the under side thereof, means to depressthe latch bar against the pressure of the spring, and a strike plate adapted to be secured to a gate post,said strike plate presenting at the under side a flaring in- 5 vertcd notch, and side'arms extending 0ppositely at each side cf the notch, said arms presenting curved guide surfaces at the under side thereof merging into the flaring walls of the notch. Y
10 2.- In a gatelatch, a pivoted latch bar,
arms extending oppositely meansto mount the same on a gate, spring means acting to press the latch bar upwardly, and a latch plate presenting an inverted recess at the under side and guide at each side of 15 the notch adapted to engage the top surface of the latch bar to guide the latch bar to said notch.
