APPLICATION FILED AUG.I4. I914.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
wWmssfis 2 TinTTnn STATES PATENT canton CHAMBERS S. ORR, OF SPRINGDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION-TOOL FOR PAIN TEES USE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAMBERS S. ORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springdale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools for Painters Use; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved combination tool, and more particularly to that class of tools known among house painters as a putty knife for glazing, etc., and it comprises an implement made of spring steel having a broad chisel or knife shaped portion, cylindrical handle part with serrated top and bottom surfaces to form a door wedge, and a means whereby the tool may be connected with the pocket of the person usin the same, and the invention further consists in the certain details of construction and combination of other features, as will be fully described hereinafter.
This improved tool is a combined door wedge, a can opener, a putty knife and a locking device to engage with the pocket of the person using the same, said locking device will prevent the tool from accidentally dropping or becoming detached from the clothing.
House painters when painting a door, hinged in position, must of necessity provide a wedge to hold the door open while operating on both sides. The present tool will answer this purpose.
Paint, white lead, color matter and other materials are usually packed in tin receptacles, this tool may be used to open such receptacles. The tool may be used for all the purposes of an ordinary putty knife.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an inverted perspective view of my improved combination tool, the same Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed August 14, 1914. Serial No. 856,712.
being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing the serrated or roughened surface.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved combination tool.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the handle of the tool, showing a modified form of the same.
To put my invention into practice, I first provide a plate or thin steel 1, form the same at the forward end with a chisel or sharpened edge 2, which answers the purpose of the putty knife proper, the opposite end 3, being bent in the form of a loop or circle, care being taken that the free end 4, will not be in close contact with the body-portion 1 of the tool, for the double purpose of forming a spring and as a means of holding the tool to the clothing, as will be hereinafter described.
The blank from which the tool is formed is provided with serrated or roughened portions, the one 6, extending along a part of the length and on the top surface of the tool and the other 5, at the crown of the cylindrical or handle portion 4. These serrated portions 5 and 6, engage with the bottom edge of the door when inserted beneath the same and also with the floor beneath, thereby efiectually locking the door rigid at any desired position while being operated upon.
The putty knife portion of the tool may be used inthe ordinary manner and for various purposes, and it is obvious that the said knife may be used as a can opener.
It will be noticed that the handle portion 3, is in the form of a spiral or open coil, the inner or free end 4, being away from contact with the body-portion 1. This construction answers the double purpose of forming a spring when compressed by the weight of the door, and when inserted in the pocket of the workman, serves as a means of attaching the tool to the top edge of said pocket.
The tool may be used for a number of other purposes well known in the art of house painting.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A tool of the character described, comprising a flat body-portion formed from a suit able piece of spring metal, one end of which having a greater Width than the other, an open cylinder With spaced end formed integral With and tangent to said reduced end to form a handle and a means of attachment 10 with the pocket of the personusing the same, and the other or broad end sharpened CHAMBERS S. ORR.
