Description
J. W.'CARR. TOOL HOLDER FOR METAL WORKING MACHINES APPLICATION FILED SEPT-5.1911.
Patented Apr. 9,1918.
mvm'ron; JAmEs W CHM? JAMES WILLIAM CARR,
OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
TOOL-HOLDER FOB METAL-WORKING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1918.
Application filed September 5, 1917. Serial No. 189,753.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WILLIAM CARR, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in and Relating to Tool-Holders for Metal-Vorking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to turret tool holders of the kind in which the tools are secured in a tool case integral with a spindle which passes through a split bearing adapted to be clamped by a handle to lock the spindle to the holder and in which the tools are held in operative position by a pawl engaging a ratchet secured to said spindle. The invention has for its object to improve generally the construction of such tool holders.
A feature of the invention consists in an improved arrangement whereby the pawl is continuously maintained in engagement with the ratchet wheel. Another feature consists in the improved disposition of the clamping means for the split hearing.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front view, Fig. 2 a rear view and Fig. 3 a plan partly in section of the improved tool holder.
With reference to the drawings, 1 denotes the tool holder arm which is formed at one end with a split bearing 2 in which is mounted the spindle 3 carrying thereon the tool case having the tools 5 secured therein in known manner. To the end of the spindle 3 opposite that carrying the tool case is secured by means of a screw 6 a ratchet 7 with which is adapted to cooperate a pawl 8 pivoted at 9 on the arm 1. In accordance with one feature of this invention the pawl 8 is provided with a depending pin 10 engaged by a piston 11 located in a pocket 12 in the tool holder arm 1 said piston being pressed forward in the pocket 12 by a helical spring 13 which at one end abuts against the end of the pocket 12 and at its other end surrounds the reduced end of the piston 11. A plate 14 secured by screws 15 prevents the entrance of dust into the pocket 12. The ratchet teeth are provided as heretofore us ual with adjustable stops 16 in the form of screws threaded therein.
In accordance with a further feature of this invention the split bearing 2 is clamped by means of a clamp 17 having a Wedge shaped face 18 engaging in a corresponding surface on the arm and having a tightening screw 19 secured to the handle 20 and threaded in the clamp so that on rotation of the handle in one direction the screw 19 draws the separated faces of the split bearing 2 together.
WVliat I claim is 1. A tool holder for metal working machines comprising an arm having a split bearing, a spindle mounted in said arm a tool case carried by said spindle at one end thereof, a ratchet secured to said spindle at the end of said spindle remote from said tool case a pawl pivoted to said arm and adapted to engage with said ratchet, a pocket in said arm in proximity to said pawl, a piston located in said pocket, and a spring located in said pocket and adapted to actuate said piston to cause said piston to engage said pawl, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A tool holder for metal working machines comprising an arm having a split bearing, a spindle mounted in said arm, a tool case carried by said spindle at one end thereof, a ratchet secured to said spindle at the end of said spindle remote from said tool case, a pawlvpivoted to said arm and adapted to engage with said ratchet, a projection depending from said pawl, a pocket in said arm to receive said projection, apiston located in said pocket, and a sprlng located in said pocket and adapted to actuate said piston to cause, said piston L0 engage said projection, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A tool holder for metal working machines comprising an arm having a split bearing, a spindle mounted in said arm, a tool case carried by said spindle at one end thereof, a ratchet secured to said spindle at the end of said spindle remote from said tool case, a pawl pivoted to said arm and adapted to engage with said ratchet, a projection depending from said pawl, a pocket in said arm to receive said projection, a piston located in said pocket, a spring located in said pocket and adapted to actuate said piston to cause said piston to engage said projection, a clamp adapted to clamp the ends of the arm forming the split means for tightening said clamp, said means name to this specification in the presence of conslstlng of a screw threaded 1n said clamp two subscrlbing wltnesses. and adapted to o'nta'ct the face of the arm opposite the Wedge shaped i face of the arm, JAMES WI A substantially as and for the purpose set WVit nesses: forth; E. TYLER,
I'Ii tetimony whereof I have signed my JOHN S. ARMSTRONG.
