Be it known that I, CHARLES C. DELA- oRoIx, a citizen ofthe United States residing at New Orleans, in the-county of rleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel- Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fuel oil burners and has for its primary object to provide an improved burner tip or nozzle particularly designed for use in connection with fuel oil burners for boilers, whereby a maximum spread of flame from the jet orifice is4 produced so that the heat is equally transmitted to the fire sheet of the boiler, and the necessity for employing baille plates for this purpose is eliminated.
It is another object of the invention to provide in a fuel`oil burner, a burner 'tip having a jet opening or orifice throug which the flameis ejected in a plurality of directions so that unequal expansion of the re sheets of the boiler which frequently causes leaks at the seams and rivets, is obviated.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a fuel oil burner wherein airand steam is mixed with the oil in the burner tube and the oil broken u into finely comminuted particles, where y its thorough combustion is assured. 4
With the above and other objects in View, m invention consists in the novel features ofy construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the burner tube.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 desl ignates the body or head of the burner.
This body may be mounted in any preferred manner and may be of any desired proportions so that a multiplicity of the burner tubes may be applied thereto. The body 5 1s formedvwith any desired number of the laterally rojecting, tubular extensions 6 wh1c h are re uced and exterior-ly threaded at thelr ends, as indicated at 7. Upon th1s tubular extension of the burner body, the interiorly threaded end 9 of the burner tube 8 is adapted to be detachably engaged.
10 designates a steam supply pipe, preferably made of sections threaded together, one of said sections having threaded engagement, as at 11, in the body 5. This steam supply pipe extends concentrically through the tubular extension 6 on the burner body1 and into the burner tube 8. The pipe 10 is provided with a removable tip 12 having a tapering or pointed end 13 provided with a su stantially semi-circular )et opening 14 which is obliquely disposed downwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, so as to direct the steam jet against the bottom portion of the surrounding burner tube 8.
The body 5 of the burner is also provided in its upper and lower portions with passages 15 and 16, respectively. An air pipe 17, connected to the body 5, is in communication with the passage 15, while an oil pipe 18, detachably connected to the body, is 1n communication with the passage 16. These passages 15 and 16 open into the tubular extension 6 of the burner body upon opposite sides of the steam supply pipe 10.
The outerV end of the burner tube 8 is also of tapered or conical form, as indicated at 19, and is provided with the obliquely disposed, upwardly inclined jet opening or outlet 20 which is reversely disposed w1th respect to thevsteam jet orilice 14.
In the operation` of the invention, it will be understood that oil, air and steam are simultaneously supplied to the interior of the burner tube 8. It will be understood that if desired, the steam supply may be cut off and compressed air alone utilized for the purpose of breaking up the oil. As the oil is admitted to the burner tube and passes around the highly heated steam pipe 10, the same partially vaporizes so that when broken up by steam or air, a more highly combustible mixture is produced. The steam escaping from the orifice 8 in the tip section 12 of the pipe in a downward and also in lateral directions, causes a whirling motion in the body of oil. The vaporized oil being ignited at the inclined jet opening or orifice 20 of the burner tube, is sprad in a fan-shaped form and is ejected by the pressure of steam and air in the burner tube both forwardly and upwardly, as well as laterally from opposite sides of the burner tube. Thus, the heat is equally distributed aser startsein can against the fire sheet of the boiler and the expansion of the fire sheet will be equal throughout its area, thus eliminating liabilitl of leakage at the seams and rivets ot' the re sheet and also resulting in a maxiymum utilization of the heat'units so that the boiler can be operated with a minimum expenditure of fuel. The device has been thoroughly tested in practical use and found highly satisfactory, as it enables a low grade of oil to be employed as fuel, thus greatly reducing the operating cost of marine engines and the like.
F rom the above description, taken in con- .nection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. The several parts of my improved burner may be easily and quickly assembled or disconnected when it is necessary to clean the passages in the burner head. lin view of the extreme simr plicity of the device, it is also obvious that the same can be manufactured at small cost.
While l have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several elements employed, it is to be understood thatthe device is susceptible of considerable modiiication therein and l, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent iss-- v 1. in a fuel oil burner, a` burner tube having an obliquely disposed, upwardly opening outlet orifice, a steam injecting pipe extending into the tube and having an obliquelydispo'sed, downwardly opening oricerandnii supply3 means connected to the burnergtube. i. v
2. ln. iueloil-burner, a burner head, a burner tube ldetachably connected thereto having a conical tip provided with an obliquely disposed, upwardly opening outlet orice of elongated form extending upon .opposite sides of said conical tip, a steam supplyl pipe centrally disposed through the burner 'head and extending concentrically riparata into said tube and having a tip provided with an obliquely disposed, downwardly opening jet orifice, and means' for supplying oil to said tube upon one side of the steam pipe and means for supplying air to said tube from the opposite side of said pipe.
3. ln a fuel oil burner, a burner head having a tubular extension, a burner tube detachablythreaded upon said extension having a conical tip provided with an elongated, obliquely inclined, upwardly opening jet orifice extending upon opposite sides of said conical tip, a steam supply pipe mounted in the burner head having a tip projecting into the inner end of said burner tube and provided with a downwardly opening, obliquely inclined jet orifice extending upon opposite sides of the tip, and means for su 4plying oil to the burner tube upon one si i e of the steam supply pipe and means for supplying air to said tube from the opposite side of said steam pipe.
