BRIEF-CASE.
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE A. ()LWEIQL,
a citizen, of the United: States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brief- Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brief bags, cases and the like, and has for its primary objectto simplify the construction of such devicesby so disposing the handles thereof as to cause the same to be attached to the sides of the device and not to the cover or flap, at the same time "so arranging the flap or cover as to permit one handle to pass through the same and to avoid the necessity of using clasps or other locking means or buckles to keep the \cover or flap in place to permit of thesame being carried by a handle attached thereto, and to avoid the bracing of the cover or flap for the attachment of the handle, thereby lightening the device, cheapening its construction, enlargin its stability and simplifying the method 0 opening and closing the same.
Another object of my invention is to avoid the wear and tear attendant upon the use of "straps and buckles, locks and other closing devices made of metal and to save in the ordinary manipulation of them, as applied to brief cases or bags, in their heretofore familiar construction.
A further object of my invention is to give to the device such simplicity of construction as tends as a result thereof to a more finished and better appearingarticle of merchandise, at the same time adding to its stability and convenience. in use.
. A still further object of the invention is to provide a brief case orthe like capable of eing opened while supported by one of its handles, whereas in brief cases and thestruction, combination and arrangement-of parts substantially as hereinafter described and particularly defined in the appended claims.
} Specification Letters Patent. I Application filed m a, 1917. Serial to. 179,326.
' the use of locks, clasps,
Patented Apr. 2, 11 91%,
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one physical embodiment of my invention con structed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof, the flap cover beingshown extending upwardly therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my brief case,
the flap cover being in normal position c0v-,
ering the brief case, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view therethrough on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the present embodiment of my invention, 'as exemplified in the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 represent the respective sides of the case which has the closing end members 7 and the intermediate partition 8 dividing the case into sections. The caseis further provided with the usual handles 9 secured one on each side of the case in the ordinary manner, and the side 5 is continued outwardly from the case, as at 10, to, provide a flap forming the cover for the brief case.
The flap 10 is adapted to pass over the brief case as depicted in Figs. 2 and 3, and
. has its end tucked in a pocket formed by the complete example of the passage of the flap over As will be seen by reference to Figs. 2
and 3, this cutaway portion allows the handle carried by'side 6 to be outward of the cover when the same is folded over the brief case and when the cover is in this position, the flap 1% formed by the cut 12 is passed under the handle carried by side 6 and se-' cured by a suitable clasp or otherfastening 15 carried by the free end of said flap to the adjacent edge of said cutaway portion.
' Thus by the foregoing manner of constructing my case or bag l dispense with the usual faulty manner of securing the handle to the flap or cover which necessitates the use of a brace to retain the shape of'the bag and avoid a'drag upon the fastenings when thecase is'being carried closed, and with buckles and straps to keep the bag closed, and make carrying by the handle possible by dles properly to the sides, of the case and 11o securing two hanthereof may be made as come Within the scope of the claims.
I claim 1 As an article of manufacture, a case having a handle secured thereto, a cover for the case adapted to fold thereover, means for engaging the free end of said cover when folded over the case, a cut out portion in said cover to permit the passage of having a handle secured thereto, a cover for the case and adapted to be folded thereover,
the same over the handle without interfering therewith, a flap formed by said out out portion, and fastening means carried by one end of said flap for engaging the adja' cent end of said cutout portion substantially as described.
2. As an artlcle of manufacture, a case means for engaging the free end of said cover when folded over thecase, said cover having a cut out portion therein to permit the passage of the same over the handle 'consin. Without interfering therewith, and a flap formed by said out out portion to. present an unbroken surface, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a
case having handles secured to the sides. thereof and one side continued therefrom to provide a flap cover adapted to pass over the case and be tucked in a pocket formed on the other side of the case, a cutout portion in the cover to permit the handle on the said other side of the caseto be outward thereof, and a flap formedby said cutout portion and having fastening means on its free end to engage the adjacent edge of the cutoutportion of the cover when the same is in place. p
4. As a new article of manufacture, a case havin handles secured to the sides thereof, one 0 said sides being continued-to provide aflap cover, a cutout portion in said cover to permit the passage of the cover over the handle without interference therewith, a flap formed by said cutout portion, and a clasp fastening on'the free end thereof for engaging the adjacent end of said cuto ut portion, and said flap being cutaway at its sides to provide handle receivin openings.
In testimonythat I claim the regoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wis- LAWRENCE oLwELL."
