Description

r. F. REILLY. we m HANQLE'S'AND 1HE Luge;
APPLICATION FILED JULY 13, 1917.
, 'Patented Mar. 26,1918.-
JOHN F. REILLY, OF SMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
EYE FOR HANDLES AND THE LIKE.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 19118.
Application led July 13,1917. Serial No. 180.468.
To all whom it may concern." 1
Be it known that I, Jol-IN F. REILLY. a citizen of the United States, residing at. Somerville, in the county otMiddleseX and lState of lytassachusetts. have invented new and useful Improvements in Eyes for Handles and the like. of which the following' is a specification V This invention relates to improvements in eyes formed ol sheet material and has for its object to provide a cheap. strong' and durablc eye adapted to be utilized as a handle or to have attached thereto strips of material. such as leather or the like, andA which is so constructed that it will not cut or chate the material attached thereto and when used as ay handle it will present a smooth rounded surface to contact-with the hand.
rlhe invention consists in the combina-v tion and arrangement ot' parts set. forth in the following specilication andparticularly pointed out in the claim.
Referringr to the drawings:
Figurel is a side elevation of a pair ol eyes each embodying this invention and con nectecl together by a strip ot neet material constitutinga handle.
Fig. "t is a side elevation ot' an eye t'ormed in accordance with this invention, shown attached to the end ot a case and performing the function ot' a handle.
Fig'. 3 is a section taken on the line -3 of ing.
Fie". -l is a section through an eye en'ihodyingr ,this invention. showing they same attached to the end ot a strip ot' sheet material.
snclnas a strap.
Fic. 5 is a section through an eye. illustrating' how said eye may be attached to the top` ot' a ease to serve. as a handle therefor.
Like numerals rel'er to like parts throughout the several viewsof the drawings.
ln the dra wings. referring particularly to hier. 1. (i and 7 represent eyes which are l'ormed Vfrom sheet material. such as steel or fiber. This material is bent. double at 8 or l'olded near thc center thereof so that the two sections t) and 10. formed by said fold, will be substantially coextensive and lie l'ace 1o tace. l'or at least a portion of the area thereol'. llach oi' the sections S) andllt) is pcrt'oratml at adjacent lport ions lo t'orm holes ll. 1l which are adapted to aline with each other.` v 1 l rl'hese, holes are arranged near one edge of the folded material. prelerably the toldcd A ed ge -8, and they are formed by partially detaching'. portions ot' said sheet material and the material detached in this manner is bent, laterally ot' the tace of each section at 12 and in opposite directions to each other. there by formino; a thickened section or reinforce ment 17 along' one edge of the hole 11. rl`hc extremities lb ot' the portions 12 ot the material which are partially detached from the sections t) and 10 are then bent toward the edge 8 and said extremities are then 'forced against the adjacent t'aces of the sections J and 1t) soas to cover said extremities.
The portions of the sections 9 and 10 alongv the sides opposite to the folded edge 8 may be perforated as at 1l, 14 to receive screws or rivets. whereby said eyes may be attached to a ease. trunk or the like. There are numerous ways in which eyes formed in Jthis manner may be utilized. t'or instance,
in Fig. 1 a pair oi? eyes are employed as :tasfening' means tor a handle 15 constructed of sheet material which the holes 11 and t'astened at 1G. The rounded or thickened, portions 17, when used in this connection. will not chate or cut the material constituting the handle 15 even though the material trom which the eyes are formed is vciy thin.
When used as shown in Fig. 1 the sections t) and 10 ot' the sheet. material are preferably offset slightly at 1S so as to allow sntlicient room between lhe` edge, to which the handle is attached. and the adjacent portion ot the case to which said eye is attached. The eyes so t'ormcd may also be employed as handles without necessitating' the use ot the handle 15 and these eyes may be attached to the ends ot' trunks or chests in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and El. sullicicnt room being provided at 19 by otl'settine the sections 9 and 1t) at 2() to permit the fingerssto be inserted through the holes ll and through the space 19. t
By termine the eyes of two substantially coextensive sections. as at 9 and 10, said eyes may be attached to the end ol a strap or sheet otmaterial 2l. sec his'. l. wth the perforated edges ol said sections 9 and l0 upon opposite sides ot' said lsheet material, thereby providing a very strong.y handle.
i ln Fig. 5 an eye. embodying' the invention hereinhefore described. is `shown attached as a handle to the top ot a case. in which instance, the sections f) anyl l0 are heut` at Q2 is looped through and 23 respectively 'in opposite directions",
gag,
the particular angles of the extremities ofL 'the sections 9 and 10 which are attached toE the ceses, trunks or the like, may be varied from the forms illustrated Without departing from the spirit and scope oi. the invention.
Having thus specifically described my invention what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
A device of the elites described constructed of sheet material folded to form two suien etantially parallel eoextensive sections, seid sections hevingholes formed therein adje cent to the folded edge of said materiel by pertizilly deteching portions of said sheet material therefrom, seid partially detached portions of sheet material being curved lat erully and outwardly from Seid sections in opposite., directions `and toward the folded edge ofA said jmateriel to form thickened edges along the sides of said holesneerest to said fold.
n testimony whereof I have hereunto set.
my hand in presence of' e subscribing Witness.
