Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 126,078, dated April 23, 1872.

Specification of a Farriers Olinching-Tool,

invented by SIDNEY OGDEN, of Sicily, Highland county, Ohio.

The customary method of clinching horseshoe-nails is well known to require both hands and as many tools, of which one is employed to support the nail-head and the other to clinch the points of the nails by hammering. It is also well known to farriers that many horses which submit quietly to the driving of the nails become exceedingly restive under the customary clinching processnamely, with the hammer.

My invention enables the clinching of horseshoe-nails to be effected by simple pressure by one hand of the operator, whose other hand is consequently liberated for grasping the animals hoof.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my clinching-tool; and Fig. 2 is a partially-sectionized elevation of the same, showing the manner of using the implement.

The principal members of my said tool are two levers or handles, A and B, which are united by the pivot O in such a manner as to be capable of being opened and closed like a pair of tongs or pliers. Pivoted to the handle A, at a, is a shackle or rack, D, which traverses a longitudinal slot, 1), of the other handle B, and has ratchet-formed teeth or indentations (Z. That end of lever B which is above the pivot to terminates in a rest, E, whose upper surface may be roughened and be slightly concave, as shown, for the purpose of being held more securely in its proper position under the head of the nail to be clinched. Pivotcd to the lever B, at F, is an adjustable jaw, G, which is slotted at g for the reception of the shackle D, spring H, and detent or trigger I. The slot g has, at its forward end, an inward projection, J, that is capable of being engaged with either one of the indentations of the shackle, so as to retain the jaw G, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The free end of jaw G has a head, K, whose under side is furnished with a number of serrations, k, which bear upon the point of the nail in the act of clinching.

By merely depressin gthe detent I, the shackle D can be disengaged from the projection J so as to permit the opening or closing of the jaw G, and the moment that pressure is removed from said detent, its return, under the impulse of the spring, operates in conjunction with said projection J to effectually lock the shackle to its new position.

I claim as new and of my invention A farricrs clinching-tool, consisting of the two pivoted levers, Aa Bb O,ratcheted shackle Dd, rest E, adjustable jaw F Gg, detent or trigger H 1, projection J, and serrated head K70, or their mechanical equivalents, for the object designated.
