Description
H; AI HOWE.
CUSFIDOR CARRIER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 12. 1911.
j Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
HAROLD A. HOWE, OF MORRISON, ILLINOIS.
CUSPIDOR-CARRIER.
Application filed March 12, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD A. HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morrison, in the county of \Vhiteside, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspidor-Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cuspidor lifters and carriers.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and cheap device of this character which will be efficient and durable in operation.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character in which both ends can be used for gripping and holding, as well as carrying cuspidors.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cuspidor lifter and carrier.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device showing the same in operative relation with a cuspidor, the cuspidor being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device showing the other end in operative relation with a cuspidor, the cuspidor being shown in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the device is formed from heavy wire, and includes the shank portions 10 and 11. One end of each of the shank portions is bent into arcuate formation, and the ends of these portions pivotally connected together, as shown at 12 the said arcuate portions being represented by the reference character 13.
The other end of the shank 10 is bent into a rectangular frame portion ltt, which is ar- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
Serial No. 154,281.
ranged to be passed beneath the bottom of the cuspidor 15, as seen in Fig. 2.
The other end of the shank 11 is also bent into rectangular frame shape 16, but this frame is bowed in such manner that its free outer edge extends toward the frame portion 14K. This curved frame portion is arranged to be engaged in the upper open mouth of the cuspidor, and against the inner face of the flared portion thereof. The two shanks are then grasped in the handle and pressed together, whereby the two frame portions will be held in firm gripping engagement with the cuspidor, the carrying thereof being readily and easily permitted.
The hinge connection 12 readily permits the shank 11 to be swung upwardly to disengage the frame member 16 from the upper portion of the cuspidor and the complete removal of the device therefrom.
By an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4, it will readily be seen that when the shanks 10 and 11 are swung widely apart, the arcuate portions thereof may be engaged around the neck of the cuspidor and the shanks again gripped to firmly hold the cuspidor.
Thus the device is adapted for gripping difierent shaped cuspidors, or gripping the same cuspidor in different ways, as for lifting and carrying and for washing and emptying.
What is claimed is:
A cuspidor lifter and carrier including a pair of pivotally connected members each having a shank, the outer end of one of the shanks being formed witha rectangular frame portion disposed in the plane of the shank and extending longitudinally from the end thereof, the outer end of the other shank being formed with a smaller rectangular frame extending at an obtuse angle from the shank and directed toward the intermediate portion of the first rectangular frame.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD A. HOWE. lVitnesses GEORGE W. HOWE, H. J. LUDENs.
