The invention will be described as applied to a loose nailing machine of the. general type disclosed in United f'itutcs Letters Pat out No. 490,624, granted January 24,1893, on an applicationof LouisGoddu, to which Letters Patent reference may be had for dctaiied description and explanation of various features of theillustratcd machine not set forth fully herein. It is to be understood, however, tha it is recognized that the invention as a whole or various features thereof mayhave other. uses including use in loose nailinginachines of other types. In the following description the term nail will be used frequently instead. of fastening in describing the various mechanisms and the various operations performed by the machine, such use of the term nail being simply for convenienccand not by way of limitation.

Asis usualin machines of the type hereinbefoii e referredto, the illustrated machine, like the machine of said Letters Patent, is provided with a raceway adapted .to receive previously formed headed nails from ahcpper, a separator for separatingthe endmost nail from theline of nails inthe raceway and movable to present thenail. for the ope ation of a nailidriver, and. an awl having reciprocating movement to penetrate the shoe for forming successively nail receiving openings in the shoe and lateral movement to feed, the shoe between successive nail inserting operations of the driver. The awl, separator, nail throat and nail driver are carried by a swinging head which is operated after the awl' has been-moved downwardly to pierce the shoe to cause the awl to feed the WOTI. The awl is then raised out of the work and the swinging head is swung. reversely to carry the nail throat and nail. driver into positions over the nail receiving hole just made by the awl, after which the nail driver is operated to drive a nail into the said previously formed hole, the slice during the nail driving;operation heingiclamped between a work support on which it is mounted and a work plate secured to the machine frame. The locking member ltl carries a block 68 adjustably secured to said locking member by a screw 70, the said block having t vo notches or recesses 7 2 formed therein, one on each side. Pivoted to the frame of the machine is a stationary locking member 74 adjustable about its aivot by means of screws 76 which engage the stationary locking member 7 1 at either side of pivot and hold it firmly in adjusted position. The locking member 7a is also provided with an arm 7 8 having a bearing for one end of a ball-ended link 81, the other end of which link is seated within one end of a plug 80 secured in projection from the machine frame, the plug 80 assisting to hold the locking member 7a in adjusted position. To enable the stationary locking member 741 to cooperate with the movable locking member 46 to secure the elbow lever lO against movement when desired, the stationary locking member 7 caries on each side of the axis of its pivot a block 82, each of the blocks 82 having a tooth or knife edge, one or the other of which is received in the corresponding recess 7 2 in the block 69 upon downward operative movement of the movable locking member 46.
The construction and arrangement are such that the movable locking member 46 is automatically moved downwardly to cause one or the other of the knife edges projecting. from the block 82 on the stationary locking member 7a to enter the corresponding recess 7 2 in the block 68 on the said looking member 46 upon downward shoe penetrating awl movement. By this construotion and arrangement the elbow lever 10 is locked against movement either to connect or disconnect the awl mechanisms while a shoe is being fed. It will be understood that the position of the knee lever 40 when operative locking movement is imparted to the movable locking member to will determine which knife edge is caused to enter the corresponding recess, cue knife edge and recess cooperating to lock the elbow lever l0 when the elbow lever 1-0 is in the position in which the awl mechanisms are connected and the other knife edge and recess coopcrating when the elbow lever 40 is in position for elfecting disconnection of the awl mechanisms. Conveniently, stops 4:7 carried. by the machine frame are arranged to limit the movement of the elbow lever 40 in one or the other direction.
In addition to the driver mechanisms and. awl mechanisms before described, in order to adapt the machine for inserting simultaneously a plurality of rows of fastenings when desired, as previously mentioned the matching is provided with a plurality of raceway mechanisms for supplying previously formed headed nails and a plurality of nail separator mechanisms for governing the supply of nails from the'raceways.
For supplyin nails to the separators, the machine is provided with a raceway 84: and an auxiliary raceway 88 (Fig. 1) constructed and arranged to hold previously formed headed nails. The separator mechanisms comprise a separator 86 (Fig. 4.) and operating means therefor, and an auxiliary separator 90 and operating means for the auxiliary separator. The separator 86 is carried at the lower end of a lever 91 (Fig. 2) fulcrumed at 93 on the swinging head 14 and provided at its upper end with a roller 95 which bears against a cam face forming part of the cam disk indicated at 21. A suitable strong spring 97 attached to the swinging head it operates to maintain the roller 95 in engagement with its operating cam. As shown, the separator 86 is of a well-known construction and need not be described in detail herein, the described con struction and arrangement providing for reciprocating the separator 86 to cause its blade end to be inserted between the endmost nail in the line of nails in the raceway and the adjacent nail and to move said endmost nail to present it for the operation of its driver. The auxiliary separator 90 is carried at the lower end of a depending lever 92 (Fig. 1) pivoted at 94: to the swinging head 14.
In the illustrated machine. the auxiliary separator and the auxiliary awl mechanism are constructed and arranged to be controlled simultaneously, provision being made for causing initiation and suspension of the operation of the auxiliary separator to be controlled by the initiation and suspension of the operation of the auxiliary awl mechanism. To this end, the auxiliary separator lever 92 carries at its lower end a roller 96 adapted to engage a cam face 98 formed on the auxiliary awl bar 12, the construction and arrangement being such that when the auxiliary awl 10 is moved downwardly the cam face 98 will engage and swing the auxiliary separator lever 92 to move the auxiliary separator 90 into its retracted position in readiness to perform a nail separating operation. On the upward movement of the auxiliary awl 10 after it has pierced and fed the work, the auxiliary separator lever 92 will be swung forwardly again by means of a spring 100 and will be caused to separate and feed anail from its raceway. It will be apparent that when the auxiliary awl bar 12 is disconnected from the awl bar 16 and thereby rendered inoperative, the auxiliary separator lever 92 will also be rendered inoperative, As shown, the extrenio inn 'ard posititm ol the auxiliary separator lever (Fig. 1) may be varied by means of an adjusting screw 102 adapted to engage one face ol. the auxiliary awl bar 15!.

While theshoe is being fed by the awls l0 and 18, the sliding locking member &6 will automatically be forced downwardly through its described connection with the aWl mechanism operatingshaft 35 to cause one of the notches 72 to overlap one of the teeth 82, thereby locking, the knee lever and elbow lever lO against movement, and thereby preventing movement of the pin 24. Upon subsequent upwardmovement of the awls after the completion of the shoe feeding movement, the movable locking, member 46 will be raised to its normal position'by its operating spring 48, unlocking the elbow lever 40 and knee lever and permitting manipulation thereof to connect or disconnect the and mechanisms, and thereby to render operative or inoperative the auxiliary separator mechanism.
Having fullyexplained the present invention and described in what manner the same may be embodied, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, awl mechanism, raceway mechanism for supplying previously formed fastenings, separator mechanism for governring the supply of fasteningsfrom the raceway mechanism, auxiliary awl mechanism, auxiliary separator mechanism, and means for controlling the operation of said auxiliary awl and separator mechanisms simul taneously.
2.111 a machine of the class described, the combination with awl mechanism, raceway mechanism for supplying previously formed fastenings, and separator mechanism for governing the supply of fastenings from the raceway mechanism, of auxiliary awl mechanism, auxiliary separator mechanism, and a controller operating to throw said auxiliary awl and separator mechanisms simultaneously into or out of operation.

A machine of the class described having, in combination, mechanism for inserting a plurality of fastenings successively in a shoe to form a row, a raceway mechanism for supplying previously formed fastenings to the fastening insertingmechanism, a separator mechanism for governing the supply of fastenings from the raceway mechanism, and a co-acting auxiliary fastening inserting mechanism, said fastening inserting mechanisms constructed and arranged to insert in the shoe substantially simultaneously a plurality of rows each comprising successively inserted fastenings.

A machine of the class described having, in combination, a raceway mechanism for holding and supplying previously formed headed nails, a separator mechanism for governing the supply of nails from the raceway mechanism, nail driving mechanism comprising a driver and means for reciprocatin g the driver to insert a plurality of said nails successively in a shoe to form a row, an auxiliary nailseparator mechanism, and auxiliary nail driving mechanism, said nail drlivingmechanismscoacting to insert simultaneously in the shoe a plurality of rows, each comprising successively inserted nails.

A machine of the class described having, in combination, an awl mechanism for formingfastening receiving openings successively in a shoe, a raceway mechanism for supplying previously formed f-astenings, a separator mechanism for governing the supply of fastenings from the raceway mechanism, an auxiliary and mechanism, and coasting fastening inserting mechanisms constructed and arranged to insert simultaneously a plurality of rows of fastenings in the fastening receiving openings formed by said awl mechanisms.

A machine of the class described hav ing, in combination, an and mechanism for forming fastening receiving openings in a shoe, raceways for supplying previously formed fastenings, separators for governing the supply of fastening-s rrom the raceivays, an auxiliary awl mechanism, and fastening inserting mechanism comprising coacting drivers each constructed and arranged to insert fastenings successively in the fastening openings formed by the corresponding awl mechanism, said. drivers being arranged to form substantially simultaneously a plurality of rows of said fastenings.

In a machine of the class described, a reciprocatin awl bar, an awl carried by said awl bar, an auxiliary awl bar normally imlependent of said first-named awl bar, an auxiliary awl carried by said auxiliary awl bar, and means for connecting said auxiliary awl bar with said first-named awl bar for reciprocation therewith.

In a machine of the class described, a reciprocating awl bar, an awl carried by said awl bar, an auxiliary awl bar, an auxiliary awl carried by said auxiliary awl bar, and manually controlled means operable during the operation of the machine for connecting said auxiliary awl bar with said first-named awl bar for reciprocation therewith.

In a machine of the class described, a reciprocating awl bar, an awl carried by said bar, an auxiliary awl bar, an auxiliary awl carried by said auxiliary awl bar, an element for ope "atirely connecting said auxiliary awl bar and said first-named awl bar, and a controller operatively connected to said .element for initiatin and suspending the operation of said auxiliary awl bar upon movement of the controller.

In a machine of the class described, a reciprocating awl bar, an awl carried by said awl bar, an auxiliary awl bar, an auxiliry awl carried by said auxiliary awl bar, a shiftable pin for connecting said auxiliary awl bar to said first-named awl bar for reciprocation therewith, a manually operable controller, and lever connections from said controller to said pin.
23. In a machine of the class described,
awl mechanism, raceway mechanism for supplying i astenings, separator mechanism for governing the supply of fastenings from the raceway mechanism, auxiliary awl mechanism, auxiliary separator mechanism, means for throwing said auxiliary awl and separator mechanisms into and out of operation, and means operable to prevent said auxiliary mechanisms being thrown into or out of operation during a predetermined part of the cycle of operations of the machine.
