To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, HENRY O. NIELSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elko, in the county of Elko, State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful lmprove ments in Permutation-Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 1nvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention is an improvement 1n locks and has particular reference to a permutation pad lock. 7

An object of the invention 1s to provide improved means for locking the parts of the lock together in such manner that the same may be separated only when said means is 1n its unlocking position.

Another object is the provislon of a detent of novel construction carried by-one of the.

shackles of the lock so that the same may be adjusted by the other shackle to an unlocking position to permit of an operation of the parts of the lock.

A further object is to provide a lock of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and etfectlye in carrying out the purpose for which it 1s designed.

The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lock constructed in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the detent and locking bar employed.

The lock preferably comprises a pair of shackles 10 and 11, the latter having an enlarged end 12 provided with a socket 13 for receiving one end 14 of the shackle 10, said end being reduced as indicated at 15 parts in to provide shoulders 16'for limiting the longitudinal movement of the shackles relative to each other, detachment of the ends 12' and 14 being prevented by transverse pins 17 extending across the socket 13 and engaging the reduced portion 15.

The opposite end of the shackle. 11 is also enlarged as indicated at 18 and provided with a longitudinal opening 19 for receiving the locking end 20 of the shackle 10, said locking end being provided with a notch 21 fora purpose which will presently appear.. Ad ustable in the enlargement l8 and tending longitudinally of the edge of the locking end 20 having the notch 21 therein is the detent 22. preferably in the form of a plate provided at each end thereof with diagonally projecting reduced extensions or pins 23 which engage in suitable recesses in theenlargement 18 so as to guide the detent 1n its adjustments. These pins 23 are arranged in a diagonal relation with reference to the detent and also the locking end 20 so that said detent, when adjusted, will move 1n a d1rection which is diagonal to the longitudinal axis of the enlargement 18 whereby the same may be adjusted toward and away from said locking end 20. The detent is normally retained in its locking position by means of a coil spring 24 engaging one end of the pins or extensions 23 which force the detent toward the end 20. Pivoted to the detent 22 at 25 is a locking pawl 26 the free end of which engages in the notch 21 when in looking position and is retained in said position by means of a leaf spring 27 se cured to the detents and having its free end engaging the adjacent longitudinal ed e of said bar. a

The movement of the pawl 26 toward its lockmg position is limited by a shoulder 28 formed upon the detent and providing a stop which engages the longitudinal edge of the pawl opposite that engaged by the spring 27.

A plurality of tumblers 29 are rotatably mounted upon the enlargement l8 and each tumbler is provided with a recess 30 which 1s adapted to be alined with the recesses of the other tumblers, by a suitable'combination, so that the locking end 20 ma be extracted from its locking position.

What is claimed is j V V A permutation pad lock including a pair of shackles one end o f'one of which is provided with opening, an adjacent end of the other shackle being insertible into said'opening and provided with a notch, a detent adjustableinthe first named end and having pins extending diagonallyfrom the endsthereof whereby to guide said detent toward and away from saidlocking end when said detent is adjusted means normally retaining the detent 'in its lock- .ing position, a locking pawl pivoted to said detent and normally in position to engage thenotch in the second named end, and

recessed tumblers mounted upon the first named 1 end and adapted to have their recesses alined-to' receive avportion-Vof said detentwhen thesame isadj'usted.
