JAMES DUTHIE. lm pr ovementin Bank Notes Bonds Revenue Stamps, &c. N0. 125,550, PatentedApril9,1872.
Imp V n W UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIoE.
JAMES DUTHIE, on NEW YORK, n. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,550, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES DUTHIE, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved method of preventing the removal of the cancellation of stamps and the reuse of the same, and the alteration of checks, notes, and all other kinds of documents in writing, in such manner and by causing a disfigurement of the stamp or document that will be clearly observable; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs and illustrations, marked 1 2 3 4 5, makin g a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in preparing the stamp, check, note, or other document, either before or after printing or writing the same with a thin coating of writing-ink or fluid, by pen-ruling the same with the said ink or fluid in various forms or devices, colors, or combination of colors.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its manufacture, first promising that by the word ink I mean the fluid employed in writing with a pen, which is a dye, the other inks, such as Indian ink, stamping or printingink, being paints, whether mixed with oil or water. i
In preparing paper to be used for printing stamps, blank-checks, or notes, or any other form of blanks or written or printed documents, or after it has been so printed or written upon I rule in a base or ground with fluid writingink, by machinery or by hand, with a pen or pens, and in any or all colors, combinations, or designs, capable of being made out of the known writing-inks. Some of these forms are shown in the illustrations which form a part of this specification, and are marked 1 2 3 4 5, in which the base or ground is ruled in with a pen or pens and with fluid writing-ink. The object and merit in thus pen-rulin g in the base or ground in writing-ink is that thus the ground and the ink used in writing thereon with a pen are the same in their chemical properties, and any attempt to remove the writing or cancellation by washing with acids will also and unavoidably remove the ground-Work by dissolving it, while the combination of colors, as is well known, will render the design mor dithcult to photograph; and, further, the paper for the use or reception of the writing-ink must be sized, and the use of acid upon it destroys to a great extent this sizing, so much. so as to prevent other writing-ink lines from being again ruled over the place where the acid was used or applied.
I do not claim the use of a ground-work of any printing inks, fugitive or otherwise, whether ruled or coated on the paper, nor colors nor designs of the same, nor the mode or method of applying the same; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The use of a ground-work of writing-ink of different colors upon notes, checks, &c., applied by any of the known means of pen-rulin g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JAMES DUTHIE.
